Chemistry Division, Indian Lac Research Institute, Namkum, Ranchi 834010, India
SUMMARY:
The solubility parameter (6) of shellac has been estimated from three dimensional
approach and solubility map methods, and was found to be 11.3 c d l 2 ~ m - ~ ’The
~.
maximum ultimate strength %ax of shellac has also been estimated.
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:
Der Lthlichkeitsparameter (6) von Schellack wurde nach den Methoden der dreidi-
mensionalen Niiherung und in einem LOslichkeitsfeld bestimmt. Es ergab sich ein
Wert von 11,3 C ~ I ’ cm-3’2.
/~ Die Festigkeitsgrenze o,- von Schellack wurde ebenfalls
bestimmt.
Introduction
where n, = 1.5236 and V = 833 cm3for shellac2. From Eq. (4), the 6, value
was found to be 5.66 ca1'12

where E is the dielectric constant and F the dipole moment. For shellac2E =
3.6; nD = 1.5236; V = 833 cm3, and p = 1.2024 debye. The dipole moment
of shellac cannot be determined directly because of well-known reasons12.
Thus we have used the refractive index method (an indirect method)13 to
calculate the dipole moment using Eq. (6):

Here all terms have their usual meanings. Thus, the calculated value of 6, for
shellac has been found to be 0.17 ca11/2~ m - ~ / ’ .
where A is the number of -OH groups in the molecule. The estimated value
of S, for shellac has been found to be 5.47
Therefore, by equating the S,, %, and S,, the 6 of shellac has been found
to be 11.3 caP2 ~ m - ~ ” .
Tab. 1 shows the observed solubility in 22 solvents listed in order of their
solubility parameter. A detailed correlation for each solvent however is not
to be expected since the range examined includes solvents having widely
different polarity and hydrogen bonding character. Shellac is found to be
