Materials that have the
Ability to Absorb Water,
Sink and Float
Module in Science
Quarter 1: Week 1

What I Need to Know
This module contains exercises on classifying different kinds of materials.
Some materials absorb water and they get wet. Others do not absorb water and
they do not get wet. Furthermore, you will find out why these materials behave
the way they do. You will classify materials according to their properties too
whether these materials absorb water or not and others whether they float or sink.

For the facilitator:

As the facilitator of this module, be patient and be understanding in helping
the learner in accomplishing this module. Provide clear instructions on how to go
about the given activities. Encourage the learners to finish this module. Remind
the learner to use another sheet of paper to answer the activities found herein and
handle this material properly.
For the learner:
Please keep this material neat. Read every page very carefully. Follow
instructions carefully. Answer all the questions independently and honestly.
Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper. After answering, compare your
answers with the given KEY ANSWERS. Again, you can only compare after you
answered all the tasks given.
If you have clarifications or questions, please feel free to ask your teacher
or parents.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. Classify materials that have the ability to:
a. Absorb water
b. Float on water
c. Sink in water

2
The table below will help you understand the parts of the learning

What I Know
Find out how much you already know about the topics in this module. Choose
the correct answer and write the letter of your answer on a separate sheet. Please
answer all items. Take note of the items or questions that you incorrectly
answered and try to find the correct answer through the module.

1. Materials differ in many ways. Some materials absorb water and some do
not absorb. Which is referred to as the ability to take in fluid in a natural or
gradual way?
a. absorb b. sink c. float d. decay

2. Materials in the environment can be classified according to their properties.

They can be classified based on their ability to absorb water more than
others. Materials that absorb water have tiny holes that allow them to take
in water. How are these materials classified?
a. porous materials
b. non- porous materials
c. hard materials
d. soft materials

3. There are materials that do not allow water to go through. They do not have
tiny holes to hold water. How are they classified?
a. porous materials b. non- porous materials
c. hard materials d. soft materials

4. Below is a list of materials found inside the classroom. Which of the

following is a non- porous material?
a. plastic cup b. eraser c. chalk d. cloth

5. A basket is filled with different materials like T- shirt, rubber ball and
glass cup. Which of the following is a porous material?
a. glass cup b. t- shirt c. rubber ball d. bottle

4
6. Materials are also classified according to their ability to float and sink.
Which of the following is referred to as the ability to stay on top of water?
a. float b. sink c. absorb d. decay

7. If there are materials that can stay on top of water, there are also materials
that go to the bottom of water. How do we call this ability of materials to
go to the bottom of water?
a. sink b. float c. absorb d. none of the above

8. If you were to choose a group of materials, which group of materials has

the ability to sink?
a. Styrofoam cups, rubber ball, handkerchief
b. handkerchief, t- shirt, pants
c. Styrofoam, rubber ball, balloon
d. Leaves, paper, cloth

9. Which of the following materials below has the ability to float?

a. stone b. metal c. electric bulb d. steel

10.Materials have their differences but they also have their similarities. All
materials that float always float. All materials that sink always sink.
a. true b. false c. maybe d. never

5
What’s In
Do you still remember what matter is? The different phases of matter?
Now, go through them one by one.
Matter. It is anything that has mass and occupies space. It has three states
which are solid, liquid, gas.
Solid. It has definite shape. Some examples of solids are tables, chairs,
books, cloth, jars, stones and others.
Liquid. It has no definite shape. It takes the shape of its container. Some
examples of liquid are soy sauce, orange juice, water, tears, sweat.
Gas. It has no definite shape. It takes the shape of its container. Some
examples of gas are fart, wind, air and others.

What’s New
After recalling some concepts when you were in Grade 3, you will now
study a set of jumbled words. We hope you can work on them and come up with
the words that we are looking for.
1. BSOARB= _ _ _ _ _ _: The ability of materials to take in water naturally
or in a gradual manner.
2. LFAOT= _ _ _ _ _: The ability of materials to stay on top of water.
3. IKNS= _ _ _ _: The ability of materials to go to the bottom of water.
4. PUROOS= _ _ _ _ _ _: Having tiny holes to allow fluid like water to go
through.
5. ONN- PUROOS= _ _ _- _ _ _ _ _ _: Having no holes so the materials
does not allow fluid like water to go through.

6
What Is It
In order to understand the lesson better, do this simple experiment. Ask
the guidance and supervision of your parent/guardian.
Materials that you need:
Basin, t-shirt, empty water bottle with cover, metal spoon, stone
Procedure:
Fill the basin with water. Put the face towel, empty water bottle with
cover, stone in the basin. Observe the materials.
Questions to answer:
1. What happens to the empty water bottle with cover?
___________________________________________
2. What happens to the metal spoon and stone?
___________________________________________
3. What happens to the t-shirt?
___________________________________________
4. Which material floats?
___________________________________________
5. Which material sinks?
___________________________________________
6. Which material absorbs water?
___________________________________________

Findings/ Observations:
1. Did all the materials above float? ______
2. Do all the materials above sink? ______
I therefore conclude that (all, not all) materials sink and (all, not all)
materials float.

7
Now, read and understand each of the terms below.

It is the ability of a material to take in fluid, like

water in a natural manner or gradual way. The material has
tiny holes to allow fluid to go through. Some materials that
has the ability to absorb are cloth, handkerchief, tissue

paper, pad paper, pants, cotton and others.

It is the ability of materials to stay on top of water.

Some materials that float are ball, balloon, coconut,
pomelo, ship, boat, logs and others.

It is the ability of materials to go to the bottom of

water. Some materials that sink are stones, rocks, soil and
others.

These are materials that have tiny holes that allow

fluid to go through. These materials have the ability to
sink. Some materials that are porous are cotton, clothes,
Photo by: www.google.com/search handkerchief, pants and others.

These are materials that do not have tiny holes. They

do not absorb fluid. They float on water Some examples of
non- porous materials are plastics, plastic bottles, glass
bottles, ball, balloons and others.

Some materials may float for some time but will sink after absorbing water
or other liquids. Some examples are paper, leaves and clothes.
