BRIEF INTRODUCTION 9

Most of the salon services such as

haircutting, hair treatment and shampooing
requires draping the client as part of the salon
professional responsibility. Draping is covering
the body with flexible material or fabric to protect
the client’s clothing and skin. Aside from
protecting the clients’ clothing from becoming wet
or damaged, the drape also serves to protect them
from infectious and contagious disease. Client
draping is considered as an important aspect of every overall service
because it contributes to the client’s safety and comfort. Failure to
perform draping on the client may cause the chemical or dirt to get into
the client’s clothing and worse, into the skin. This would lead to
dissatisfied client and eventually lose patronage.

4
For overall client satisfaction, the safety, comfort and protection
of the client's skin, hair, and clothing must always be considered during
cosmetology services and this can be possible through proper draping.

LESSON 1.1 Materials Needed in Draping the Client

Having clean and appropriate materials in draping is a must to
provide a professional service. The following are the materials needed
when draping a client.
1. Shoulder cape -is used to protect the
client’s clothing from getting dirt during
the hair treatment process. A cape can
be made of cloth or plastic. A cloth cape
is used for hair styling or hair cutting
while the plastic cape is used when
applying chemicals to the hair.

2. Rubber cutting/coloring collar-made

from silicone used to protect gowns and
capes while doing hair perming. It is
weighted at the front to ensues it stays in
place and makes a good seal around the
neck.

3. Towel- used to blot excess water. It can

also be placed under or over the shoulder
cape. Ideal size of towel for hairdressing
is 12 in x 27 in while the ideal color is
black.

4. Neck Strip – used for sanitary purposes

when cutting hair or giving other hair
treatments to prevent the cape from
touching the neck of the client.

5. Hair duck clips/ clamp – used

for fastening the cape in place
and for securing the hair when
draping

5

4. Maintain high standards of hygiene. Wash hands with soap and
water, or use a liquid hand sanitizer, prior to performing any
services on a client.
5. Clean and disinfect tools and materials before and after servicing
each client in accordance with the Occupational Health and
Safety Code (OHSC) requirement.

Preparing A Client

Draping the client usually begins after the client consultation and
before any professional cosmetology service starts. During the
consultation, a client should be greeted with a warm smile and be
treated in a professional manner. The following are the steps in
preparing a client.

1. Prepare the materials and supplies for the service. Make sure
supplies are pre-sanitized including the work area.
2. Sanitize hands.
3. Ask the client to remove all neck and hair jewelry and store it
away.
4. Remove objects from the client’s hair.
