International market disruption

Written by
Oliver Hatfield, Vice President Business Development,
Argus Media, UK

Welcome once again to Fertilizer Focus. This issue is dominated by the

continent of Europe which has been in the industry spotlight since Russia’s
invasion of Ukraine in February this year. Beside the obvious human tragedy, this has had
wide ranging disruptive economic impacts throughout the region and beyond, with the
European nitrogen fertilizer industry particularly exposed.
Mike Nash, Senior Editor of Argus’s fertilizer market reporting team here in London
contributes a piece which describes and assesses the impact of the war on the main fertilizer
products and raw materials. He emphasizes that while markets have largely adjusted to the
initial disruption, with prices of many products reverting to pre-war levels, further challenges
lie ahead. The knock-on impact from increasingly volatile gas markets in Europe due to
Russia switching off gas supply in response to sanctions, has been substantial European
nitrogen capacity closures. This has created the potential for further future international
market disruption as Europe is likely to substantially increase imports of urea to fill the
supply gap left by urea and nitrates closures in the region.
Sean Mackle, Trade and Economic Director at Fertilizers Europe, is well placed to reflect on
the European Union’s response to the challenges posed by the invasion. For natural gas,
this include a a drastic reduction in the EU’s use of Russian gas this calendar year and
a mandatory target of refilling gas storage to 80% by November 2022. The region is also
accelerating its switch toward greener energy sources to try and close the energy supply gap.
Despite these measures, he points out that the fertilizer industry will be a sector meriting
support, which could include state aid.
David Fyfe, Chief Economist at Argus, reports on how many commodity markets are adjusting
from the initial war-related supply disruptions and their inflationary price impact, to demand
destruction. Of growing concern, commodity futures markets are starting to price in weaker
commodity prices as worries grow about an outright recession by the end of this year or
early next. Europe is likely to be particularly susceptible to an even deeper energy-related
economic shock, being the most exposed region to the cut off in Russian gas supplies which
have brought about a rise in Europe’s gas prices above $80/mmBtu, and the closure of more
than half of Europe’s nitrogen capacity.
Our colleagues in Agritel report on one bright spot from the region, noting the wheat market
impact of Ukraine resuming crop exports from the Black Sea. This is welcome given the war
impact on crop prices this year, and the related concerns about food security and availability.
No doubt all of these issues will be the main topics of conversation when Europe’s
fertilizer industry executives join us at the Argus Fertilizer Europe conference which is fast
approaching in October.
Moving away from the present to the past, we’re pleased to include the fifth instalment
of our ‘History of Fertilizers’ feature, written by Michael Freeman, which focuses on the
development of guano as a commodity fertilizer in the 19th century, and the development
of natural resources of sodium and potassium nitrate, most notably in South America. We’re
also delighted to be able to share a contribution from Hillel Magen, providing a fascinating
overview of the development of potash supply from the Dead Sea, which begin in the first
half of the 20th century.
We hope you enjoy our latest issue!

Michael Freeman writes:

For some 45 years until I retired in 2010, I was an economic analyst specialising in the study of the mining and chemical
sectors, in particular the mineral fertilizer industry. When I started out, many of the active companies had names that
related to their origins in the 19th Century as producers of superphosphate and potash, traders in guano, or as suppliers
of meat processing by-products. Consolidations and closures caused most of these old names to disappear, and with
them the links to the industry’s origins.
Retirement gave me an opportunity to explore the early years of the modern mineral fertilizer industry and to write
about it. I chose to terminate my coverage at the end of the 19th Century, by which time the production of phosphate CaTs® GranuPotasse®
and potash fertilizers had become well established, at least in Europe and North America, but the creation of a 100 % readily available liquid Ca and S Optimum uptake of granular K and S

in the 20th Century.
Being based in London, I have been able to use the resources of the British Library and the London Library to
supplement the material that is available on line. I have tried to prevent my account from being too Anglo-centric,
although there is no doubt that the UK’s highly-developed farming and finance sectors did allow it to be the industry
leader for a brief time in the middle of the 19th Century.
