WR5- NATURAL DISASTER

TSUNAMI
Tsunamis are giant waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under the
sea. Out in the depths of the ocean, tsunami waves do not dramatically increase in
height. But as the waves travel inland, they build up to higher and higher heights as
the depth of the ocean decreases. The speed of tsunami waves depends on ocean
depth rather than the distance from the source of the wave. Tsunami waves may
travel as fast as jet planes over deep waters, only slowing down when reaching
shallow waters. While tsunamis are often referred to as tidal waves, this name is
discouraged by oceanographers because tides have little to do with these giant
waves.

CUASES OF TSUNAMI
Tsunamis are caused by violent seafloor movement associated with earthquakes,
landslides, lava entering the sea, seamount collapse, or meteorite impact. The most
common cause is earthquakes. See the percentages on the right for the geological events
that cause tsunamis. Note that 72% of tsunamis are generated by earthquakes. A
disturbance that displaces a large water mass from its equilibrium position can cause a
tsunami. Tsunami is waves caused by a sudden movement of the ocean surface due to
earthquakes, landslides on the sea floor, land slumping into the ocean, large volcanic
eruptions or meteorite impact in the ocean. It destroys human life and livelihood and also
causes the loss of natural resources.

PREVENTION FOR TSUNAMI

1. Avoid Inundation Areas: Site Buildings or infrastructure away from

hazard area or locate on a high point.
2. Slow Water: Forests, ditches, slopes, or berms can slow down waves
and filter out debris.
