Apply Maths
Every day, we apply mathematical ideas and the skills we develop from solving arithmetic
problems. We can identify relationships, comprehend patterns, and make future predictions using
mathematics. It aids us in carrying out a variety of crucial daily tasks. However, the inability of the
students to readily relate the abstract or conceptual components of mathematics to reality is one
The Department of Education (DepEd), through the Bureau of Education Assessment (BEA),
conducts the 2022 International Student Assessment Program (PISA), a major study under DepEd
Program. PISA aims to assess education systems around the world by testing the skills and
knowledge of 15-year-old students who are nearing the end of compulsory education. PISA does
not only test knowledge retrieval tests, but rather how students can apply their knowledge and
skills to real-life situations and problems. In PISA 2018, Filipino students scored an average of 353
in mathematics, well below the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development)
average of 489. Only one in five Filipino students (19.7%) achieved at least the minimum level
In the Philippines, experiential learning approaches are widely used in different schools and
universities. However, the studies on the effectiveness of experiential learning approaches to
improve students' capabilities in real-life application of mathematical concepts are limited,
especially for the grade 10 students. Grade 10 students are expected to already know the basic
concepts of mathematics and can easily apply their learning in real-life situations but they are
still struggling. This situation motivates the researcher to improve the capabilities of Grade 10 in
applying their learning about mathematical concepts in real-life situation through role playing
activity. Math role-plays are activities that allow students to apply their skills in real-life situations.
It also provides an opportunity for informal, relaxed learning.
Using this intervention, the researcher believed that the students could easily apply their
learning about mathematical concepts in real-life situations. It's also a great way to get students
excited about math and show them how it can be fun and useful in their daily lives.
