RA RC
Step 1 Find the External 50N
Force RA and RB
B
a. To find the External Force RA, use “C” as the
pivot.

Moment = Force (N) x Distance (m)

Mo(+) = RA x 2m
Mo(-) = 50N x 1m
60°
Mo(+) = Mo(-) A C
RA x 2m = 50N x 1m 2m

Force RA and RC
B
b. To find the External Force RC, use “A” as the
pivot.

Moment = Force (N) x Distance (m)

Mo(+) = 50N x 1m
Mo(-) = RB x 2m
60°
Mo(+) = Mo(-) A C
50N x 1m = RA x 2m 2m

Step 2 Find the Internal Force
FAB and FAC
FAB
a. Draw the FBD for Joint A.
b. From the FBD diagram, find Σfy.

Σfy = 0
RA + FAB Sin 60° = 0 FAB = -28.7N
25N + (FAB x 0.87) = 0
(FAB x 0.87) = -25N 60°
FAB = -25N A FAC
0.87
FAB = -28.7N
RA = 25N
Note: The arrow-head direction for FAB should be
changed to opposite force direction.
Step 2 Find the Internal Force
FAB and FAC
FAB
c. From the same FBD diagram, find Σfx.

Σfx = 0
FAC + FAB Cos 60° = 0
FAC + (-28.7N x 0.5) = 0 FAB = -28.7N
FAC + (-14.4N) = 0
FAC = 14.4N 60°
A FAC
Note: The arrow-head direction for FAC show the right FAC = 14.4N
force direction.
RA = 25N
Step 3 Find the Internal Force
FCB and FCA
FCB
a. Draw the FBD for Joint C.
b. From the FBD diagram, find Σfy.

Σfy = 0
RC + FCB Sin 60° = 0 FCB = -28.7N
25N + (FCB x 0.87) = 0
(FCB x 0.87) = -25N 60°
FCB = -25N FCA C
0.87
FCB = -28.7N
RC = 25N
Note: The arrow-head direction for FAB should be
changed to opposite force direction.
Step 3 Find the Internal Force
FCB and FCA
FCB
c. From the same FBD diagram, find Σfx.

Σfx = 0
FCA + FCB Cos 60° = 0
FCA + (-28.7N x 0.5) = 0 FCB = -28.7N
FCA + (-14.4N) = 0
FAC = 14.4N 60°
FCA C
Note: The arrow-head direction for FAC show the right FAC = 14.4N
force direction.
RC = 25N
Step 4 Find the Internal Force
FBA and FBC
B
a. Draw the FBD for Joint B.
b. From the FBD diagram, FBA = FBC. 60°

FBA = -28.7N
FBA = -28.7N FBC = -28.7N
FBC = -28.7N

Note: The arrow-head direction for FAC show the right

force direction.

The given diagram shows a
simple trusses having joints
A, B, C, D, and E. If the 200N
dimensions and angles of
the truss are known,
calculate the following B D
external and internal forces
acting on the structure:
1. Find the External Force
RA and RE
2. Find the Internal Force
FAB and FAC 60°
A E
3. Find the Internal Force 1m C
