M-7 D.G.SAFETY DEVICE TESTING PROCEDURE
Pressure transmitter (PTZ201) is connected to the ESM-20 (X14-7, X14-8) for lubricating
Oil pressure measurement. The range for this transmitter is 0–10 bar ↔ 4–20 mA.
GUID-B6565A2F-A156-4EC7-AA6B-14DD8000CBB6
Prerequisites: Make sure the engine is in stop or standby mode.
Procedure:
1. Connect a mA simulator to the lubricating oil pressure transmitter input (X14-7,
X14-8), or simulate the pressure at the transmitter with a pressure simulator.
2. Increase the mA signal/pressure until the start blocking LED is switched off.3-52 DBAE0441
3. Verify that the start blocking is deactivated at the stated set point.

Prerequisites
Make sure the engine is in stop or standby mode
Procedure
1. Connect a mA simulator to the lubricating oil pressure transmitter input (X14-7,
X14-8), or simulate the pressure at the transmitter with a pressure simulator.
2. Set the mA simulator or pressure simulator above the shutdown limit (7.2 mA/2.0 bar).
3. Start the engine and wait until it reaches nominal speed.
4. Decrease the mA signal or pressure slowly until the LO pressure shutdown occurs.
5. Verify that the shutdown is activated at the shutdown limit.
There is a filtering delay after the shutdown limit has been reached.
6. Check the LEDs on the ESM. The following LEDs should be switched on:
● LO pressure shutdown
● Stop solenoid 1, 2 and 3

M-7 D.G.SAFETY DEVICE TESTING PROCEDURE
Prerequisites
The engine has to be running.
Tools
Tools: Temperature Calibrator or Process calibrator
Procedure
1. Heat the sensor (preferably using a dry block calibrator), or connect a Pt-100
Simulator to the sensor input.
Sensor Input in ESM
TEZ402 X13-4, X13-5 and X13-6
2. Increase the sensor’s temperature until the HT water temperature shutdown occurs.
3. Verify that the shutdown is activated at the shutdown limit (110 °C).
There is a filtering delay after the shutdown limit has been reached.
4. Check the LEDs on the ESM. The following LEDs should be switched on:
● HT temperature A shutdown (TEZ402) or HT temperature B shutdown (TEZ403)
● Stop solenoid 1, 2 and 3
5. Check the output signals on the Local Display Unit (LDU) or on the operator’s
Interface. The following signals should be activated:
● Stop/shutdown status 1 - 2
● Shutdown status
6 Push the shutdown reset button to reset the engine and ESM.
There are two alternatives for testing the pneumatic overspeed safety system functionality.
● Alternative A: Actually running the engine to the over speed limit (115% of the nominal
speed)
● Alternative B: Simulating the engine speed with the Wartsila speed simulator

M-7 D.G.SAFETY DEVICE TESTING PROCEDURE
Only one of the alternatives needs to be used to test the pneumatic overspeed safety
system.
This procedure is for testing the pneumatic overspeed safety system by actually running the
engine to the overspeed limit.
Perform the test with the engine running in CB open control mode (no engine load).
CAUTION
Monitor the engine speed continuously during the test. If the overspeed trip malfunctions or the
engine speed is equal or higher than 120% of the nominal speed, stop the engine immediately by
pressing the emergency stop button.
Procedure
1. Disconnect the primary speed sensor ST173 from the input X13-2 on the Engine
Safety Module (ESM).
2. Start up the engine and bring it up to nominal speed.
3 .Increase the engine speed slowly (~1 rpm/second) up to 115% of the nominal speed.
4 .Verify that all over speed safety actions are performed by the ESM when reaching over speed
(115% of the nominal speed).
NOTE
When performing the test for the first time, if the speed cannot be increased to the overspeed
limits, an automation system parameter must be changed by a service engineer to enable the
testing.
e. Check that the stop solenoids CV153.1 and CV153.2 are energized.
Use a screw driver or a metallic piece to sense if a magnetic force is produced by the
energized stop solenoids.
5. Reset the overspeed trip by pushing the reset button.
6. Reconnect the speed sensor ST173 to the input X13-2 on the ESM.
7. Disconnect the secondary speed sensor ST174 from the input X14-2 on the ESM.
8. Perform steps 2–4.
In step 4a: Check that the LED Overspeed shutdown 1 is switched on due to the primary
Speed sensor ST173 measurement.
9. Reset the overspeed trip by pushing the shutdown reset button.
10 .Reconnect the speed sensors ST173 and ST174 to the ESM.
4.2 Testing the pneumatic overspeed safety system using Wartsila Speed simulator
GUID-A07378DA-7113-4B2A-A3BE-07D264C733C9
Tools: Wartsila Speed simulator
This procedure is for testing the pneumatic overspeed safety system by using the Wartsila
Speed simulator.
Perform the test with the engine running in CB open mode (no engine load).
23. Control and monitoring Wartsila 50DF Engine O&MM3-56 DBAE044112-
CAUTION
Monitor the engine speed continuously during the test. If the overspeed trip malfunctions or the
engine speed is equal or higher than 120% of the nominal speed, stop the engine immediately by
pressing the emergency stop button.
Procedure
1. Disconnect the primary speed sensor ST173 from the input X13-2 on the ESM and
connect the Wartsila Speed simulator to this ESM input.

2. Start up the engine and bring it up to nominal speed.
3. Increase the simulated engine speed slowly (by turning the knob on the speed
simulator) (~1 rpm/second) up to 115% of the nominal speed.
4.Verify that all overspeed safety actions are performed by the ESM when reaching
overspeed (115% of the nominal speed).
This indicates that the engine is being stopped by the primary overspeed input to which
the speed simulator is connected (ESM input X13-2).
b. Record the maximum measured value of the engine speed at the moment of
overspeed activation.
Compare the measured value with the calculated value 115% (tolerance: -1% and +0%)
of the nominal speed to see if they are the same.
c. Verify that the alarm IS1741 EMG Overspeed shutdown 1 status is activated on the
Local Display Unit (LDU) or on the operator’s interface.
e. Check that the stop solenoids CV153.1 and CV153.2 are energized.
Use a screw driver or a metallic piece to sense if a magnetic force is produced by the
energized stop solenoids.
7. Reconnect the speed sensor ST173 to the input X13-2 on the ESM.
8. Disconnect the secondary speed sensor ST174 from the input X14-2 on the ESM and
connect the Wartsila Speed simulator to this input.

CAUTION
Monitor the engine speed continuously during the test. If the over speed trip malfunctions or
the engine speed is equal or higher than 120% of the nominal speed, stop the engine
immediately by pressing the emergency stop button.
NOTE
When testing the overspeed systems, alarms will be activated when the speed
sensor(s) are disconnected.
NOTE
All ESM-20 safety actions are disabled during this test (HT temperature shutdown and LO pressure
shutdown).
Procedure
1. Start up the engine and bring it up to nominal speed.
2. Disconnect the speed sensors ST173 and ST174 from the ESM inputs X13-2 and X14-2
respectively.
3. Increase the engine speed slowly (~1 rpm/second) up to about 118% of the nominal
speed.
4. Verify that all overspeed safety actions are performed by the mechanical overspeed
trip device.
a. Record the maximum measured value of the engine speed before the engine is
stopped.
b. Verify that the emergency stop signal GS172 Mech overspeed trip released is
activated on the Local Display Unit (LDU) or on the operator’s interface.
5. Reset the mechanical overspeed trip device.
6. Reconnect speed sensors ST173 and ST174.
