    Steel is an alloy made by adding carbon or other metals to iron. An alloy of iron and manganese is less malleable than pure iron because manganese atoms disrupt the arrangement of iron atoms in the metal lattice. Drawings of the atomic arrangements show that low-carbon steel has more iron atoms and is more malleable, while high-carbon steel has more carbon atoms which make it harder but less malleable.
