BSA 1-1 Assignment
Agree or Disagree.
Are you in favor of legalizing marriage among homosexuals and transgenders?
Why?
Although I don't belong to the LGBTQ+ community, I have a couple of friends
who do. We've known for years that people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or
transgender face social, economic, and health inequities—frequently due to culture,
laws, and policies that treat them as lesser human beings. Social isolation,
harassment, and internalized homophobia are a few of the disparities they
experience. They also frequently encounter denial of rights, as with laws prohibiting
same-sex unions, discrimination in the workplace, and denial of federal benefits.
Most of us are aware that our religious beliefs and the Family Code of the
Philippines prevent the approval of same-sex marriage in our country. Eight out of
ten households in the Philippines are Catholics. It is also stated in the Family Code of
the Philippines that it only recognizes marriages between "a man and a woman."
Moreover, there are still people who are ignorant of the LGBTQ+ community, which
is why there is still a stigma among those belonging to the mentioned community.
Despite those, I still agree with legalizing marriage among homosexuals and
transgender people. We all deserve equal rights, regardless of our gender, and
freedom to choose who we want to marry. It is not like the approval of same-sex
marriage would greatly impact my personal life. In fact, there is already an Asian
country that has legalized same-sex marriage—Taiwan. It struck down a law defining
marriage as being between a man and a woman. Significant reductions in visits to
medical and mental health care services along with reduced expenses on mental
health care are one of the positive effects of the approval of same-sex marriage in
Taiwan. Everyone is entitled to happiness in life. We are already in the 21st century,
so we should stop gender-based discrimination and be open to change. We should
spread more awareness and knowledge to enlighten those who are still ignorant of
the LGBTQ+ community.
