The COBie format is a non-proprietary data format
for publishing a subset of building information
models (BIMs) oriented toward asset data rather
than geometrical data.
It was created by William East, a United States
Army Corps of Engineers officer, whose pilot
standard was published in 2007 to make the
process of providing information to building
owners, occupants, and operators more efficient.

After it was revised in 2008 to comply with

international data and classification standards, it
became COBie.
With COBie, you can capture and record important
project data at the point of origin, including
equipment lists, product data sheets, warranties,
spare parts lists, and preventive maintenance
schedules.

After an asset is built and in service, this information

is essential for supporting operations, maintenance,
and asset management.
This format should be easy for any organization
to manage, regardless of size or IT capabilities.

As it is simple, it should be possible for all tiers

of the supply chain to contribute data to the
spreadsheet.

Additionally, the format minimizes unnecessary

complexity, technology changes,
interoperability issues, and proprietary software
concerns for the client.
In May 2011, the UK government released a construction
strategy stating that it intends to adopt Level 2 BIM
(collaborative 3D BIM) by 2016 on all projects.

COBie is the required format for BIM information

submissions for Level 2.

To ensure proper validation and control of these

submissions, or 'data drops', key milestones in the
development of a project are required, allowing the
client to verify whether the available data is technically
accurate, complying with the brief, cost-effective, etc.
