Gilgamesh

One of the first known literary works from Mesopotamia, The Epic of Gilgamesh, offers

important insights into the traits and qualities that the culture of the time regarded as most

desirable. The tale reveals several significant characteristics and qualities that provide insight

into the customs and values of ancient Mesopotamia. The tale emphasizes the value of friendship

and teamwork, claims Mark (2018). The relationship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu is a major

motif, highlighting the importance of friendship, loyalty, and trust. The appearance of Enkidu in

the narrative highlights the notion that meaningful human connections were highly valued in

Mesopotamian civilization.

The epic makes clear that pursuing fame and glory is a commendable trait. A focus on

excellence and being remembered by future generations is shown by Gilgamesh's quest for

immortality and desire to leave a lasting legacy. This shows that obtaining personal success and

recognition was highly valued by Mesopotamian society. The epic also emphasizes the value of

bravery and fortitude in the face of adversity. Gilgamesh's many confrontations with difficult

obstacles and terrifying creatures highlight the importance of facing one's anxieties and

displaying bravery. With such a focus on bravery, it is possible that Mesopotamian society

respected those who exhibited daring and fortitude.

The epic also illustrates the importance of honoring and pleasing the gods. The gods are a

key part of the story since Gilgamesh's quest brings him to the world of the divine. This reflects

Mesopotamian culture's emphasis on religious devotion and respect and its belief in a close

connection between humanity and the divine. Finally, the epic discusses death and accepting

one's limits. After realizing that immortality is impossible, Gilgamesh has a greater

understanding of the human situation. This shows that Mesopotamian culture prioritized self-

reflection and accepting death as a given (Mark, 2018).

In summary, the Epic of Gilgamesh offers insightful information on the desired traits and

values of Mesopotamian culture. Aspects of importance in ancient Mesopotamian society

included friendship, grandeur, bravery, awe of the gods, and a sad acceptance of death. These

themes provide a window into the social and moral principles that influenced this ancient

civilization's worldview.
