Class: BEE-6th B
Complex Engineering Problem
Total Marks: 50

Instructions:

1. Each group should take different values from the other groups to get the simulation
results
2. No member can change the assigned group

Problem statement:
A three-phase, 6-pole, Y-connected synchronous generator is rated at 120 MVA, 13.8 kV,
0.85-PF-lagging, and 60 Hz.
D-Axis Synchronous Reactance: 2.5 Ω
Q-Axis Synchronous Inductance: 1.5 Ω
Field Winding Resistance: 1.0 Ω
Field Current for Rated Voltage, Open Circuited: 600 A

Compute the following:

1. If the full load (at rated conditions) efficiency of the generator is,75%, then find the value of
armature resistance 𝑅𝑎 .The mechanical and the core losses are independent of the load
conditions and are given as 10 MW and 8 MW, respectively.
2. Determine the input and induced torques of the generator. Also find the value of the torque
angle at the rated conditions.
3. If the full load voltage regulation is 6 % then determine the internal generated voltage 𝐸𝑎 and
the synchronous reactance 𝑋𝑠 respectively.
4. For the full range of the generator operation, i.e., no load to full load, compute the efficiency
and voltage regulation of the generator. Use MATLAB to plot the efficiency and voltage
regulation as a function of load current.
5. Find required field current for operation at rated power at unity power factor, and plot a
torque/angle curve for operation at rated terminal voltage and that field current.
6.. Now, considering the loss elements: armature resistance loss, core loss and field winding loss,
calculate and plot machine efficiency over the range of 50MW <P < 120 MW at unity power
factor, also increase efficiency of Syn-Generator ?

Important: Implement this problem using MATLAB and also verify analytically.
