7 GRAMMAR LESSON

I. THE SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE


1. The Simple Present Tense is used to express habitual or repeated activities.
Examples: I go to school everyday.
She eats at home.
2. It is also used to express true facts.
Examples: The sun rises in the east.
Ann does not like fish.
3. With all the English verbs, except TO BE, we use the AUXILIARIES do-does-don´t-
doesn´t. They are called auxiliaries because they help the main verb to form interrogative
and negative sentences. The auxiliary do-don’t is used with the personal pronouns I, you,
we and they. The auxiliary does-doesn’t is used with the personal pronouns he, she and it
(the third person singular).
Examples: TO WORK
Affirmative Negative Interrogative
I work I do not work Do I work?
You work You do not work Do you work?
He works (*) He does not work Does he work?
She works (*) She does not work Does she work?
It works (*) It does not work Does it work?
We work We do not work Do we work?
You work You do not work Do you work’
They work They do not work Do they work?
*After the third person singular -he, she, it- the verb takes an s or es.
Contractions: do not = don’t / does not = doesn’t
4. The auxiliaries are also used to form short answers.
Examples: Do you study English? Yes, I do / No, I don’t
Does he go to work? Yes, he does / No, he doesn’t

II. VERBS TO HAVE and TO DO

*Notice the third person singular has.
The verb to have also implies eating or drinking.
Examples: I always have salad for lunch.
She never has breakfast.

III. INTERROGATIVE WORDS (Wh- question words)


The interrogative words are used in questions, which require specific information (time,
place, person, etc.).
WHAT? WHEN? WHY? WHICH?
WHO(M)? WHOSE? WHERE? HOW?
Examples: Where do you live? I live in Caracas. (Place)
When do you have lunch? I have lunch at 1:00 o’clock. (Time)
Who is your brother? Michael is my brother. (Person)
How do you come to class? I come to class by bus. (Mode)
Whose book is this? It is mine! (Possessive form)
Note: When making questions with the interrogative word WHO? and the answer is the
subject, auxiliaries DO – DOES are omitted.
Examples: Who has an extra pencil?
I have an extra pencil. (full answer)
I do. (short answer)
Who comes to class everyday?
She comes to class everyday. (full answer)
She does. (short answer)
