D. Presentation
The teacher will present the lesson base on the activity.
E. Lesson Proper
Circle - A circle is a set of points given distance from one point called the center.
Radius - The distance from the center.
Standard form of a Circle - (x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2
Standard form of a Circle if the origin is the center of the circle - x2 + y2 = r2

Example 1:
Write the standard equation of the circle with a center at (-4, 0) and radius 7.

Solutions:
(x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2

(Substitute the given values)

(x – (-4))2 + (y – 0)2 = 72
(Simplify)
(x + 4)2 + y2 = 49

Example 2:
Write the standard equation of a circle with a center at ( -5,0) and radius 4.8.

Solutions:
(x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2
(x – (-5))2 + (y – 0)2 = 4.82
(x + 5)2 + y2 = 23.04

Example 3:
The point (1, 2) is on a circle whose center is (5, -1). Write a standard equation of the
circle.

Solutions:
(Use the distance formula)
r = √ (x 2−x 1)2 +( y 2− y 1)2
(Substitute the values)
r = √ (5−1)2 +(−1−2)2
(Simplify)
r = √ (4)2 +(−3)2
r = √ 16+9
r = √ 25
(Square root the result)
r=5
(Standard equation of a circle)
(x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2
(Substitute the values)
(x – 5)2 + (y – (-1))2 = 52
(Simplify)
(x – 5)2 + (y + 1))2 = 25

Example 4:
Write an equation of the circle, in standard form, centered at the origin and with the
radius equal to 5.

Solutions:
(Standard equation of a circle)
(x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2
(Substitute the values)
(x – 0)2 + (y – 0)2 = 52
(Simplify)
x2 + y2 = 25

Example 5:
Write an equation of the circle, in standard form, centered at the origin and with the
radius equal to 12.

Solutions:
(Standard equation of a circle)
(x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2
(Substitute the values)
(x – 0)2 + (y – 0)2 = 122
(Simplify)
x2 + y2 = 144

Example 6: Graphing Circles

The equation of a circle is (x+2)2 + (y-3)2 = 9. Graph the circle.

Solutions:
(Rewrite the equation)
(x+2)2 + (y-3)2 = 9
(x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2
(x – (-2)2 + (y – 3)2 = 32
(Simplify)
(x + 2)2 + (y – 3)2 = 32
The center is (-2, 3) and the radius is 3.

Example 7:
The equation of a circle is (x – 1)2 + (y + 3)2 = 25 . Graph the circle.
Solutions:
(Rewrite the equation)
(x - 1)2 + (y+3)2 = 25
(x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2
(x – 1)2 + (y – (-3))2 = 52
(Simplify)
(x - 1)2 + (y + 3)2 = 52
The center is (1, -3) and the radius is 5.

Example 8:
Given the graph of a circle, find the center, radius and its equation.

Solutions:
(Locate the center)
Center: (1, -3)
(Locate the radius)
Radius: 7
(Substitute the values)
Equation: (x – 1)2 + (y + 3)2 = 49

Example 9:
Given the graph of a circle, find the center, radius and its equation.
Solutions:
(Locate the center)
Center: (0, 0)
(Locate the radius)
Radius: 12
(Substitute the values)
Equation: x2 + y2 = 144
