Action Inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria at level of 30S


ribosome

Indication/s Treatment of serious gram-negative bacterial infections


and infections caused by staphylococci when penicillin
or other less toxic drugs are contraindicated

Contraindication/s Hypersensitivity to aminoglycosides; Most parenteral


products contain bisulfites and should be avoided in
patients with known intolerance; Pedi: Products
containing benzyl alcohol should be avoided in
neonates; Intestinal obstruction

Side effect/s Ataxia, ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity,


diarrhea, nausea, vomiting

Common interaction/s with other Inactivated by penicillin and cephalosporin when co-
medication/s administered to patients with renal insufficiency.
Possible respiratory paralysis after inhalation
anesthetics or neuromuscular blocking agents. Increase
Incidence of ototoxicity with loop diuretics. Increase
incidence of nephrotoxicity with other nephrotoxic
drugs. Neomycin may increase anticoagulant effects of
warfarin.

Route/s of administration with IM, IV (Adults and Children): 5 mg/kg q 8 hr.

Therapeutic level IM: rapid / 30–90 min / 6–24 hr.


IV: rapid / 15–30 min / 6–24 hr.

IM administration should be deep into a well-developed
muscle. Alternate injection sites.
: If aminoglycosides and penicillin or cephalosporin
must be administered concurrently, administer in
separate sites.

precaution/s level monitoring useful in preventing ototoxicity and
nephrotoxicity); Hearing impairment; Neuromuscular
diseases such as myasthenia gravis; Obese patients

Patient / Family teaching


Instruct patient to report signs of hypersensitivity,
tinnitus, vertigo, hearing loss, rash, dizziness, or
difficulty urinating.
Advise patient of the importance of drinking plenty of
liquids.
Teach patients with a history of rheumatic heart disease
or valve replacement the importance of using
antimicrobial prophylaxis before invasive medical or
dental procedures.
Advise female patient to notify health care professional
if pregnancy is planned or suspected or if breast
feeding.
