PRÉFACE.
Cet ouvrage est mon premier, et lent fut son succès; je ne pouvais le
protéger d’aucune manière, occupé comme je le suis de la vaste
entreprise où il tient si peu de place. Aujourd’hui, je ne veux faire que
deux remarques.
La Bretagne connaît le fait qui sert de base au drame; mais ce qui se
passe en quelques mois fut consommé en vingt-quatre heures. A part
cette poétique infidélité faite à l’histoire, tous les événements de ce livre,
même les moindres, sont entièrement historiques; quant aux descriptions,
elles sont d’une vérité minutieuse.
Le style, d’abord assez entortillé, hérissé de fautes, est maintenant à
l’état de perfection relative qui permet à un auteur de présenter son
ouvrage sans en être par trop mécontent.
Des Scènes de la vie militaire que je prépare, c’est la seule qui soit
terminée; elle présente une des faces de la guerre civile au dix-neuvième
siècle, celle de partisans; l’autre, la guerre civile régulière, sera le sujet
des V .
