Dragon Genetics Lab(part 2&3) Stella

Name:_______________________
ii
Objective:
You will then reproduce with another dragon and predict the probability of specific genotypes/phenotypes for offspring
based on the dragon parents.

Part 2: With Partner

5. You will assume your dragons are 1 male and 1 female dragon.
6. Complete Table #2. Record the genotypes provided by each dragon parent to the dragon baby.
7. Use a Punnett Square for each trait and determine the genotype combinations that will result for the offspring. Record
the probability for each phenotype in Table #2.
8. Answer the questions at the end before continuing with the Baby Dragon Genetic Analysis.

Questions:
1. List the Homozygous Dominant traits of Your Dragon:
Long tail and no spike

2. List the Homozygous Recessive traits of Your Dragon:

Neck length, tail spike, three toes

3. List the Heterozygous traits of Your Dragon:

No wings/wings, one horn pair/two horn pair, red eyes/yellow eyes, blue
spots/no spots, fangs/no fangs, green body/purple body, non re breather,

Part 3 Continued: Dragon Baby Genetic Analysis
Randomly select the traits the baby dragon receives from the parents.

Procedure:
1. Flip a coin many, many, many times!!
2. Go back to Table #2 and look at the two GENOTYPE columns
3. You will flip a coin to determine the genotype for you dragon baby (HEADS = left allele , TAILS = right allele)
4. For each trait you will flip a coin 2 times.
The first flip is for YOUR Dragon and the second flip is for THEIR Dragon.
5. Record the results of the flips to form the Dragon Baby’s genotypes in Table #3.
6. Go back to Table #2 and HIGHLIGHT the genotype in the Punnett Square that resulted in your Dragon Baby
Sibling

1. How many of the 13 traits does your Dragon Baby have in common with its Parent Dragon #1?

2. How many of the 13 traits does your Dragon Baby have in common with its Parent Dragon #2?

8
3. How many traits does your Dragon Baby have that NEITHER parent showed?
2
5. How is it/would it be possible that your Dragon Baby shows traits that neither parent showed?

If both have heterozygous and it gets to both recessive.

Construct and Draw your “baby” dragon accurately based on its genotypes. (TABLE #3)
