Determine the meaning of words and expressions that reflect the local culture by noting
context clues. (EN 8V-If-6)

a.The teacher will give the students a reading selection and then ask them to pay
attention to the underlined words.

above and try to give meaning to those words from the text by analyzing its use in the
sentence.

The Philippines is considered a melting pot which is a place where people of


different races, religion, beliefs, and tradition blend together as one. This diverse
and varied culture makes Filipinos unique from the rest of the world. Filipinos
give much importance to their values. Despite of the modern influence, they still
retain their traditional practices. One of their trademarks is hospitality like
welcoming the guests with a big smile and treating them warmly. In times of
challenges and catastrophies, they don’t easily give up as resilience is one of their

E. Abstraction
SUMMARY OF THE LESSON:
One of the ways in determining meaning of words and expressions reflecting local
culture is through context clues.- are words that appear in sentences to help understand the
meanings of difficult words.
Context clues are of different types:
1.by Definition- the unfamiliar word is defined in a sentence
Ex: An Archeologist is a person who searches for treasures from sunken ships
and ancient tombs to obtain valuable relics, artifacts, and relics such as the
Balanghai boat.
2. by Synonym- a similar word is placed in the same sentence to know the
meaning of the unfamiliar word.
Ex: It is common for Filipino to feel compassion or pity for the suffering of their
fellowmen. (synonym: pitty)
3.by Antonym- an opposite word is placed in the same sentence.
Ex: Among the siblings of thin body structure, Isabel is the only one who is
portly.( antonym:thin)
4.by Comparison- a similar word with the same meaning of the unfamiliar word
is placed with an object to be compared.
Ex: The stench of the garbage was like the smell of a rotten fish. ( comparison:
rotten fish, means bad odor)
5.by Example- samples are provided in the sentence to understand the meaning
of the unfamiliar word.
Ex: In ancient times, some of our forefathers believed in amulets, such as pearl
of the crocodile, pearl of the ax, bullet necklace, and bbag of herbs to protect
them from harm.(ex: pearl of the crocodile, pearl of the ax, bullet necklace, bag
of herbs)
6.by Explanation- a description is given to understand the meaning of the
unfamiliar word.
Ex: Matthew had few infractions of the house rules that he should have done as
part of hir responsibilities.
(explanation: house rules that he should have done)
7. by Cause-Effect- the meaning of the difficult word depends on the cause-
effect relationship of other words as expressed in the sentence.
Ex: Since only a few followed the wearing of facemask, it was made mandatory
by the government.
(cause: only a few followed the wearing of facemask)
8.by List or series of clues- to understand the meaning of the unknown word, it is
included in a series of word given in a sentence.
9.by Inference-to understand the meaning of the unknown word, one has to make
a guess based on the description given in the sentence.
Ex: When one shows hospitality, kind words and welcoming actions can be
observed among Filipinos.

retaining their cultural identity. Truly, Mindanao is a promise land.

us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and
teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do
every good work.( 2 Timothy 3:16-17)

V. Assignment
Think of Me! ( Filipinos are known for being strong in facing challenges. They don’t
simply give up.
Directions: Write a 2- 3 paragraph about how you face your greatest challenges using
one or more types of context clues.
