8 Drift Indicator System Installation, Operation, and Maintenance Manual
1 Introduction
This manual explains how to install, operate, and maintain Drift Indicator
Systems manufactured by AOI Instrumentation™.

AOI Drift Indicator Systems enable drill operators to maintain controlled,

absolutely vertical drill paths. The Drift Indicator System records tiny
changes in the drill angle—as small as fractions of a degree—so the drill path
can be quickly and efficiently corrected back to vertical. Frequent readings
make sure drill path variations will be quickly found.

one minute. The chart head retracts and rotates, then again descends onto the angle
indicator so a second hole is punched in the chart.

After the second hole is punched, the chart head retracts, and the Drift
Indicator System is ready for the operator to retrieve it from the well.

Double recorders

Double recorders

Five types of double recorders are available from AOI Instrumentation:

■ Standard Double Recorder — Two standard double recorders are
available:
• Double recorder for 1¼-inch go-devils, with a range of 0 to 8 degrees
• Double recorder for 1-inch go-devils, with a range of 0 to 7 degrees
■ Tandem Double Recorder — Each tandem double recorder attaches to
another tandem double recorder, enabling two separate readings by
recorders with different degree ranges. One Tandem Double Recorder
uses a range of 0 to 7 degrees; the other one uses a degree range of 0 to 14
degrees or 0 to 21 degrees.

Double recorders

■ Low-Angle Double Recorder — The low-angle double recorder is for

use in bore holes that must be held to low deviation angles. The low-angle
double recorder can measure downhole drifts of 0 to 1½ degrees and
0 to 3 degrees.

Low-angle double recorders are not for use in tandem configurations.

Notes
Low-angle double recorders can operate with both types of
go-devil.

For a degree range of 0 to 1½ degrees, a special return spring

(part number ASR 4591) is required for the go-devil.

■ High-Temperature Double Recorder — The high-temperature double

Double recorder handling and storage instructions

The double recorder is a precision instrument. In order to keep the double
recorder in proper operating condition, follow these handling and storage
instructions:
■ Do not handle the double recorder with gloves or dirty hands. If grease,
moisture, grit, or dust enter the recorder mechanism, you may need to
send the double recorder to AOI Instrumentation for repair.
■ When the double recorder is not in use, store it in the Drift Indicator
System equipment box.
■ Do not use pliers or other tools on the double recorder. Use only your
fingers to screw the recorder timing element into the angle indicator (See
“Assembling the double recorder” on page 57.)
■ Do not wash any part of the recorder with water, solvent, or fluid of any
kind.

In order for readings to be accurate, you must use the correct size spearpoint
for the go-devil. A spearpoint that is too small will produce incorrect
readings. Each AOI Instrumentation go-devil includes a spearpoint whose
diameter is the same as the diameter of the go-devil.

Go-Devil

Go-devil handling and storage instructions

Do not use chain tongs or pipe wrenches to break out or make up go-devil
connections. The 1-5/16 and 1-5/8-inch go-devils have a wrench flat on the
bottom container plug that is welded to the go-devil tube and provides backup
for making up and breaking out the upper container plug.

To prevent damage to the shock absorber, always store the shock absorber
inside the go-devil when the go-devil is not in use.

Note
Do not tighten the sealing packer because the neoprene seal may set and
lose its ability to seal.

To keep mud, water, and dirt out of the go-devil during storage, cap the
go-devil tube with the upper container plug screwed down to within 1/4 inch
of seating.

Caution Replace the seal if you see any wear, deterioration, or damage.

2 Using the Drift Indicator System
This chapter explains how to prepare the Drift Indicator System for use. This
chapter also describes the various methods for using the Drift Indicator
System at the well site.

Drift Indicator System running methods

There are six methods for running the Drift Indicator System (double recorder
and go-devil) down holes on rotary rigs and two methods for holes drilled
with cable tools. This chapter provides instructions for each method.

The following factors determine the best running method to use:

■ the make-up of the rig
■ the amount of time available
■ drilling conditions

Regardless of which running method is used, you use one of the following
procedures for lowering and retrieving the go-devil:
■ Free-drop the go-devil into the drill line and recover it after the recording.

or
■ Lower and retrieve the go-devil on a line.

Selecting the appropriate Drift Indicator System

There are 10 sets of Drift Indicator System equipment for use in specific
drilling conditions and with specific running methods. Each set is referred to
as an Operating Unit. Use Table 1 on page 24 as a guide to determine the best
Drift Indicator System to use for particular running methods.

of the drillpipe on a line. Running Method 1 is the most widely used method.
With adequate hoisting equipment, it is also the fastest method.

You can use any of the five go-devils (listed on page 17) with this method. If
mud is thick or if there is heavy friction on the hoist, you may need to insert a
sinker weight between the spearpoint assembly and the go-devil body or
between the swivel socket assembly and the go-devil body. The sinker weight
must be the same diameter as the go-devil.

Using Rotary Drill Running Method 1

Take the reading as close to the bit as possible and while the bit is as near the
bottom as possible.

To take the reading:

1. Run the go-devil to the bit.

The go-devil contacts the wall of the drill collar for the entire length of the
go-devil, assuring a proper alignment.

2. Take a reading while the go-devil is suspended near the bit.

If an obstruction in the drill line prevents you from running the

go-devil to the bit, insert a baffle plate in the joint immediately above the
obstruction and take a reading from that point.

Note
Use a baffle of the correct size and type for your drilling situation. See
“Baffle plates” on page 20 and “Baffle plates” on page 110.

Running Rotary Drill Method 3

With Running Method 3, you free-drop the go-devil into the drillpipe and
recover it when the string is removed from the hole. This method is typically
used when the drillstring makes frequent round-trips into the hole.

Note
Running Method 3 is not recommended if 100 or more feet of hole are
made with each bit, because the readings will be too infrequent to
assure accurate vertical drilling.

3. Take a recording.

4. Remove the string from the hole.

5. Break off the bit.

6. Lay aside the baffle plate.

7. Remove the go-devil from the drill collar.

Running Rotary Drill Method 4

This method is the fastest and best way of taking records while running wire-
line coring and drilling equipment. Records can be taken frequently, with little
additional time required for lowering and raising the go-devil.

With this method, you run the go-devil into the drillpipe during recovery of a
retrievable core barrel. The go-devil, fitted with the proper accessories, is
attached to the standard core barrel retrieving equipment and is run into the
drillpipe when the core barrel is recovered.

Note
See “Upper core barrel connections” on page 116 for a complete list of
core barrel upper connections to use with your equipment.

After the record is made, both the core barrel and the go-devil are pulled from
the pipe at the same time.

Running Rotary Drill Method 5

With Running Method 5, you use a sand line to run the go-devil into the
drillpipe and to pull the go-devil out of the drillpipe.

Equipment for Rotary Drill Running Method 5

There are two ways to set up equipment for use with Running Method 5: the
recommended setup and an alternate setup.

Recommended setup

With this setup (Figure 5 on page 38), the go-devil is run into the drillpipe and
seated on the baffle plate. The line remains slightly loose while the recording
is taken.

The lower spearpoint assembly is fitted with a spearpoint head of the correct
size to guide and center the go-devil in a baffle plate placed above the bit.

One or two 6-foot sinker weights are connected to the top of the go-devil.

A retrievable stabilizer on top of the sinker weight aligns the entire assembly
in the drill collar.

A swivel unit between the sand line rope socket and the retrievable stabilizer
permits the line to turn without disturbing the go-devil.

Alternate setup

With the alternate setup, you suspend the go-devil in the drill collar a short
distance above the bit while the record is being taken, which assures that the
go-devil is correctly aligned with the drill collar.

A spearpoint head the same diameter as the go-devil body is attached to the
lower spearpoint assembly.

The finger stabilizer, sand line swivel, and sand line rope socket are removed
and an upper connection adapter sub is attached to the upper end of the
go-devil, for connecting to your existing sinker bar or swab iron.

Notes
See “Subs” on page 113 for the correct adapter sub size to use.

Make sure the sinker swab is straight and not too long. A maximum
length of 12 feet is recommended.

Using Rotary Drill Running Method 5

These are the main steps for taking a reading with Running Method 5:

1. If you are using the recommended setup (see “Recommended setup” on

page 37), run the go-devil and the sand line into the drillpipe and seat the
go-devil on the baffle plate. Leave the line a little loose.

If you are using the alternate setup (see “Alternate setup” on page 40),
run the go-devil and the sand line into the drillpipe so that the go-devil is
suspended a short distance above the bit.

2. Pull the go-devil out of the pipe.

3. To prevent mud and water from running off the sinker weight into the
upper container plug, remove the sinker weight assembly from the upper
container plug, then break the upper container plug away from the
go-devil.

Rotary Drill Running Method 6

Running Method 6 is for large (8- to 15-inch) diameter holes. You run the
go-devil into and out of the drillpipe on a wire line of 1/4- to 5/8-inch
diameter. (A sand line is recommended.)

Equipment for Rotary Drill Running Method 6

With Running Method 6, either of these go-devils can be used:

■ 1-5/8 x 1-1/4-inch
■ 1-5/8 x 1-inch (for very rugged conditions)

Equipment for this method includes two 72-inch sinker weights and two
centralizers with expandable runners that can expand or contract to keep the
go-devil correctly aligned with the axis of the hole and assures accurate
readings.

Friction of the hoist or down-hole conditions may require the use of a third
sinker weight and, for added stability, a third centralizer.

Cable tool running methods

There are two methods for running go-devils in holes drilled with the cable
tool method, both of which use a 1-5/8-inch go-devil.

Cable Tool Running Method 1

With this method, a length of pipe with an inside diameter slightly larger than
the go-devil is welded inside the upper part of a bailer, providing a socket for
the go-devil. After the cuttings have been removed from the hole and the
bailer emptied, the bailer and go-devil are lowered to within a foot or two of
the bottom of the hole and suspended there while a reading is taken.

Making swivel and socket connections

Some running methods require you to use a wire line, such as a sand line or a
measuring line (not included with the Drift Indicator System). Each operating
unit for use with these methods has one of the following types of connecting
socket for attaching the wire line:
■ measuring line swivel
■ sand line socket with a connecting swivel

The following two sections explain how to use the two types of connecting
sockets.

Chapter 2. Using the Drift Indicator System

Preparing and running the double recorder

Choosing the timer interval

The timer interval is the number of minutes between the time you set the timer
and the time the recording is taken. Consider the following factors in deciding
what timer interval to set:
■ Preparation time

Include the time required to prepare the double recorder and go-devil at
the surface — usually about 1½ minutes without accessories. If
accessories are used, include extra time for setting up the accessories.
■ Descent time

Include the time it will take the go-devil to descend into the hole to the
point at which the recording will be made. This time period varies
according to the running method used and the condition of the drilling
mud.
• If the go-devil is dropped freely into a mud-filled drillpipe (as with
Running Methods 2 and 3), it descends at the rate of 750 to 1,000 feet
per minute. In this case, calculate the descent time based on an
assumed rate of 750 feet per minute.
• If the go-devil is run into the drillpipe on a measuring line or sand
line, running speed is typically between 500 and 750 feet per minute.
In this case, calculate the descent time based on an assumed rate of 500
feet per minute.
■ Settling period

Include a settling period of 30 to 45 seconds after the go-devil reaches the

point at which the recording will be made, to allow go-devil movement
and line vibrations to stop and to allow the angle indicator in the double
recorder to come to rest.

The following two examples show typical running intervals.

Note
A tandem double recorder requires more time than shown in the
examples.

Chapter 2. Using the Drift Indicator System

Preparing and running the double recorder

Setting the timer

After you determine the timer interval, set the timer and cock the chart head as
follows:

Note
The minimum timer interval you can set is 5 minutes; the maximum is
60 minutes.

1. Hold the timing element as shown in the following illustration.

2. Carefully rotate the lower dial counterclockwise until the index mark
beside the time interval you want lines up with the setting mark. (The
markings are in minutes, but you can set the timer to approximately the
nearest half-minute.)

Caution Turn the dial slowly and carefully to be sure you do not
overshoot the mark for the interval you want, because you
cannot turn the dial back. For example, if you want to set a
10-minute interval but you accidentally turn the dial beyond
the 10 mark, you cannot turn it back to 10—you will have to wait
for the time to run down.

If you overshoot the setting, do not attempt to turn the dial

back to the setting, or you will damage the timer.

The timer now begins running.

3. Because the starting time must be coordinated with surface preparation

time, make a note of the time of day the timer starts running.

4. Cock the chart head by using your thumbs to rotate the cocking dial (the
upper dial) 2 full turns counterclockwise, until rotation stops.

Note
Be sure to rotate the dial 2 full turns.

Figure 9 illustrates the following scenario:

A. All forces acting on the drill bit are under control, and full drilling
efficiency and speed can be safely maintained. The readings indicate
no increasing curve or sustained inclination.
B. Readings indicate a curve of increasing angle, which must be
corrected.
C. The angle has been broken and a curve of decreasing angle has been
established, indicating that the course of the hole is about to be brought
under control.

3 Maintaining the Drift Indicator System
This chapter provides instructions for keeping the components of the Drift
Indicator System in proper operating condition.

Protecting equipment

The Drift Indicator System includes two equipment boxes: one for the double
recorder and one for the go-devil. Always keep the instruments and their
components and tools in the equipment boxes between jobs or when you
transport them between rigs.

If necessary, you can clean the equipment boxes with a brush or with a rag
dampened with cleaning solvent.

Drift Indicator System Installation, Operation, and Maintenance Manual TM-511 69

Chapter 3. Maintaining the Drift Indicator System

Cleaning the double recorder

Cleaning the double recorder

Do not wash any part of the recorder with water, solvent, or fluid of any kind.

See “Disassembling the When the double recorder and the shock absorber are removed from the
go-devil and removing go-devil after a run, immediately wipe them clean with a clean, dry rag. After
the chart” on page 64.
the recorder chart is removed, complete the cleaning process as follows:

1. Remove dirt from the exterior of the angle indicator and timing element
with a fine bristle brush.

2. Holding the double recorder with the opening down (to prevent dirt from
getting inside), clean the inside threads of the double recorder tube with a
brush.

3. If necessary, remove oil-laden dirt from the inside or outside of the tube
by using a cloth dampened with an approved cleaning solvent.

Note
Do not allow solvent to touch the recording mechanism or angle
indicator.

4. Reinstall the timing element inside the angle instrument tube.

5. Store the double recorder in its instrument case.

Chapter 3. Maintaining the Drift Indicator System

Lubricating the double recorder

Lubricating the double recorder

Only the following parts of the double recorder require lubrication:

■ The coarse pin thread that connects the double recorder to the shock
absorber
■ The fine thread between the timing element and the instrument tube.

At these locations, sparingly apply dry film lubricant before screwing the
parts together.

Cleaning the go-devil

After the go-devil is retrieved from the drillpipe, clean the go-devil as
described in the next sections.

Cleaning the exterior of the go-devil

1. Hose down the outside of the go-devil and flush drilling mud from around
the spearpoint with clean water.

2. Wipe the go-devil with a clean cloth.

3. Remove the double recorder and shock absorber as described in

“Disassembling the go-devil and removing the chart” on page 64.

4. Bounce the go-devil on its point a few times to make sure the spring is
free for the next run.

5. Clean the go-devil threads and all box and pin ends with the two thread
brushes provided in the go-devil equipment box.

2. Insert the hook end of the puller/cleaning rod (included in the go-devil
equipment box) into the go-devil tube and pull out the return spring.

3. Attach the go-devil brush to the rod and brush out loose particles.

4. Wrap a clean, dry cloth around the tool hook and thoroughly swab inside
the go-devil until the surface is clean and dry.

5. Reinstall the return spring in the go-devil tube with the flared end of the
spring down.

CautionBe sure to position the return spring in the go-devil with the
flared end down. If not, the double recorder may not be
properly protected from shock, resulting in incorrect readings
or damage to the recorder.

Use the round end of the puller/cleaning rod to push the return spring into
place at the bottom of the go-devil tube. When the spring is properly
seated, it compresses and expands freely. Use the puller/cleaning rod to
test this action.

Testing and maintaining the “old-style” shock absorber

If there is little or no resistance or the spring action is very stiff, the shock
absorber is not in good working order.

Shock absorber failure is usually due to one of the following causes:

■ Plugged air holes in flange of piston (5)
■ Defective O-rings (3) on piston and O-ring (10) around piston rod inside
foot seal (11)
■ Bent piston rod (15) or tube (7) due to improper handling or not storing
shock absorber inside go-devil when not in use

Lubricating the go-devil

2. Remove the piston rod and components attached to the piston rod.

3. Check to see if holes in the flange of the piston (5) are clean.

If necessary, thoroughly clean out the holes.

4. To access the O-ring (10), remove the retainer ring (8).

If this O-ring needs to be replaced, remove the piston (5) from the end of
the piston rod (15) by removing the pin (4).

Note
You’ll need a new pin (part number ASP 8189-007) in order to
reassemble the piston.

5. Check all O-rings (2, 3, and 10), the bumper (13), and the packing seal
(20) for wear and damage.

Replace any of these parts that are damaged.

6. Reassemble the shock absorber. During reassembly, use silicone grease

to lubricate the O-rings (2, 3, and 10). Also lubricate the piston rod (15)
up to the bumper.

Lubricating the shock absorber

If you have an old style shock absorber, lubricate it when you check its
operation as described in “Disassembling and checking shock absorber
components” on page 76. It is not necessary to lubricate the new-style shock
absorber (see page 98).

Periodically lightly lubricate the shock absorber piston rod—up to the

bumper—with silicone lubricant.

Lubricating the go-devil

After each run, clean the threads of the go-devil tube and upper container plug
and lightly lubricate them with a small amount of silicone lubricant.
Notes
Do not use an excessive amount of lubricant, or it may run down the
tube and impair the operation of the double recorder.

Do not use thread dope.

Chapter 3. Maintaining the Drift Indicator System

Testing double recorder calibration

Testing double recorder calibration

The AOI Instrumentation Angle Test Kit (p/n ASK 8414) provides a quick
method for determining whether or not the double recorder is providing
accurate readings.

To test the double recorder:

1. Place the test stand on a level surface and adjust the balance screws until
the two bubbles indicate that the test plate is level.

2. Select the correct holding tube assembly for the recorder. Place the
holding tube in the socket of the bearing that corresponds to the type of
double recorder you are testing.

3. Prepare and set up the double recorder, setting the timer interval for 5
minutes and using a clock or watch with a second sweep as a control
timer. (See the section “Preparing to set up the double recorder” on page
50 and the sections following it through “Assembling the double
recorder” on page 57.)

4. Place the double recorder in the holding tube, oriented the same way it
would be in a go-devil.

5. After the timing device has activated both times, compare the time on the
watch with the time on the double recorder. For the 5-minute test, allow
15 seconds tolerance.

6. Remove the chart and observe it in the chart reader. (See “Disassembling
the go-devil and removing the chart” on page 64 and “Using the chart
reader to read the hole inclination” on page 66.)

The punch marks should be on the center line of the appropriate angle circle.
If the punch marks are outside the circle by 1/16 inch (0.06) or the deviation
between the two punch marks exceeds 1/16 inch (0.06), send the double
recorder to AOI Instrumentation for repair.
