Go-Devil
There are 10 sets of Drift Indicator System equipment. Each set is referred to
as an Operating Unit, and is for use in specific drilling conditions and with
specific running methods. For more information, see “Selecting the
appropriate Drift Indicator System” on page 23.
To use the Drift Indicator System, the operator performs the following general
procedures:
timing device
chart head
angle indicator
2. Sets the timing device to determine when the Drift Indicator System will
record the drill angle.
3. Cocks the chart head and inserts the timing device into the double
recorder.
5. Runs the go-devil into the well (using one of the six running methods
described in Chapter 2, “Using the Drift Indicator System”).
When the length of time the operator set the timing device to is reached, the

procedure takes less than
one minute. The chart head retracts and rotates, then again descends onto the angle
indicator so a second hole is punched in the chart.
After the second hole is punched, the chart head retracts, and the Drift
Indicator System is ready for the operator to retrieve it from the well.

Go-Devil
Go-Devil
The go-devil protects the double recorder from shock, pressure, fluid,
and dirt.

Five different go-devils are available, with outside and inside dimensions as
follows:

In order for readings to be accurate, you must use the correct size spearpoint
for the go-devil. A spearpoint that is too small will produce incorrect
readings. Each AOI Instrumentation go-devil includes a spearpoint whose
diameter is the same as the diameter of the go-devil.
Go-Devil
Retrievable centralizers
If you must use a spearpoint that is too small for the go-devil, retrievable
centralizers are available from AOI Instrumentation that provide the required
stability.

Go-Devil
To prevent damage to the shock absorber, always store the shock absorber
inside the go-devil when the go-devil is not in use.
Note
Do not tighten the sealing packer because the neoprene seal may set and
lose its ability to seal.
To keep mud, water, and dirt out of the go-devil during storage, cap the
go-devil tube with the upper container plug screwed down to within 1/4 inch
of seating.
Caution Replace the seal if you see any wear, deterioration, or damage.
There are six methods for running the Drift Indicator System (double recorder
and go-devil) down holes on rotary rigs and two methods for holes drilled
with cable tools. This chapter provides instructions for each method.
Regardless of which running method is used, you use one of the following
procedures for lowering and retrieving the go-devil:
■ Free-drop the go-devil into the drill line and recover it after the recording.
or
■ Lower and retrieve the go-devil on a line.
You can use any of the five go-devils (listed on page 17) with this method. If
mud is thick or if there is heavy friction on the hoist, you may need to insert a
sinker weight between the spearpoint assembly and the go-devil body or
between the swivel socket assembly and the go-devil body. The sinker weight
must be the same diameter as the go-devil.

Take the reading as close to the bit as possible and while the bit is as near the
bottom as possible.
The go-devil contacts the wall of the drill collar for the entire length of the
go-devil, assuring a proper alignment.
Note
Use a baffle of the correct size and type for your drilling situation. See
“Baffle plates” on page 20 and “Baffle plates” on page 110.
For Running Method 2, you can use four sizes of go-devils, equipped with the
accessories shown in Figure 2.

The lower spearpoint assembly must be equipped with a spearpoint head that
is the correct size for the bore of tool joints and drill collars, in order to guide
and center the go-devil in the baffle plate above the bit. For more information,
see “Retrievable centralizers” on page 19 and “Baffle plates” on page 20.
The upper end of the go-devil must be equipped with a retrievable stabilizer
assembly to make sure the axial alignment is correct while the record is being
taken. The stabilizer also centers the upper core barrel overshot connection on
the go-devil. This assures that the core barrel overshot, which recovers the
go-devil, will be properly engaged.

Each additional sinker weight adds 70.3 inches and 42.0 pounds.
These are the main steps for taking a reading with this method:
1. Disconnect the kelly and free-drop the go-devil into the pipe.
2. Re-connect the kelly and run the string to the bottom of the hole.
Rotation and circulation are constantly maintained, except for about one
minute during the recording process.
3. Take a recording.
Note
Running Method 3 is not recommended if 100 or more feet of hole are
made with each bit, because the readings will be too infrequent to
assure accurate vertical drilling.
For Running Method 3, you can use four sizes of go-devils, equipped with the
accessories shown in Figure 3.

* For Operating Units 1 and 5, add 16.3 inches and 10.3 pounds for each
sinker weight added.
For Operating Units 4 and 12, add 16.3 inches and 6.8 pounds for each
sinker weight added.
These are the main steps for taking a reading with this method:
1. Just before the dulled bit is to be pulled, disconnect the kelly and free-
drop the go-devil into the pipe.
2. Re-connect the kelly and run the string to the bottom of the hole.
Maintain rotation (25 rpm or less) and circulation constantly, except for
about one minute during the recording process.
3. Take a recording.
With this method, you run the go-devil into the drillpipe during recovery of a
retrievable core barrel. The go-devil, fitted with the proper accessories, is
attached to the standard core barrel retrieving equipment and is run into the
drillpipe when the core barrel is recovered.
Note
See “Upper core barrel connections” on page 116 for a complete list of
core barrel upper connections to use with your equipment.
After the record is made, both the core barrel and the go-devil are pulled from
the pipe at the same time.

sinker weight added.
For Operating Units 4 and 12, add 16.3 inches and 6.8 pounds for each
sinker weight added.
These are the main steps for taking a reading with Running Method 4:
1. When the core barrel is about to be recovered, attach the go-devil to the
core barrel recovery assembly. (See Figure 4 on page 34.)
2. Run both the core barrel recovery assembly and the go-devil into the
drillpipe together.
The overshot on the lower end of the go-devil engages the pull sub on top
of the retractable core barrel and is centered on the drill collar.
The retrievable stabilizer on the upper end of the go-devil makes sure the
axial alignment is correct while the record is being taken.
3. Take a recording.
6. Detach the go-devil assembly from the core barrel recovery assembly.
There are two ways to set up equipment for use with Running Method 5: the
recommended setup and an alternate setup.
Recommended setup
With this setup (Figure 5 on page 38), the go-devil is run into the drillpipe and
seated on the baffle plate. The line remains slightly loose while the recording
is taken.
The lower spearpoint assembly is fitted with a spearpoint head of the correct
size to guide and center the go-devil in a baffle plate placed above the bit.
One or two 6-foot sinker weights are connected to the top of the go-devil.
A retrievable stabilizer on top of the sinker weight aligns the entire assembly
in the drill collar.
A swivel unit between the sand line rope socket and the retrievable stabilizer
permits the line to turn without disturbing the go-devil.

With a second sinker weight, add 70.3 inches.
2 With a second sinker weight, add 26.5 pounds.
3 With a second sinker weight, add 42.0 pounds.
Alternate setup
With the alternate setup, you suspend the go-devil in the drill collar a short
distance above the bit while the record is being taken, which assures that the
go-devil is correctly aligned with the drill collar.
A spearpoint head the same diameter as the go-devil body is attached to the
lower spearpoint assembly.
The finger stabilizer, sand line swivel, and sand line rope socket are removed
and an upper connection adapter sub is attached to the upper end of the
go-devil, for connecting to your existing sinker bar or swab iron.
Notes
See “Subs” on page 113 for the correct adapter sub size to use.
Make sure the sinker swab is straight and not too long. A maximum
length of 12 feet is recommended.
These are the main steps for taking a reading with Running Method 5:
If you are using the alternate setup (see “Alternate setup” on page 40),
run the go-devil and the sand line into the drillpipe so that the go-devil is
suspended a short distance above the bit.
3. To prevent mud and water from running off the sinker weight into the
upper container plug, remove the sinker weight assembly from the upper
container plug, then break the upper container plug away from the
go-devil.
Equipment for this method includes two 72-inch sinker weights and two
centralizers with expandable runners that can expand or contract to keep the
go-devil correctly aligned with the axis of the hole and assures accurate
readings.
Friction of the hoist or down-hole conditions may require the use of a third
sinker weight and, for added stability, a third centralizer.

Some running methods require you to use a wire line, such as a sand line or a
measuring line (not included with the Drift Indicator System). Each operating
unit for use with these methods has one of the following types of connecting
socket for attaching the wire line:
■ measuring line swivel
■ sand line socket with a connecting swivel
The following two sections explain how to use the two types of connecting
sockets.
Note
Use a line with a diameter of .092 inch or smaller.
1. Remove the swivel assembly and run the wire through the socket body
and under the swivel shaft pin.
2. Using a pair of pliers, make a tie that is as close and tight as possible,
winding at least 4 loops around the wire.
3. Screw the swivel back into the socket body and make it up hand-tight.
Note
Use a line with a diameter of 5/8 inch or smaller.
The main procedures for preparing and running the double recorder are as
follows:
7. Insert the double recorder and shock absorber into the go-devil.
13. Disassemble the go-devil, take out the double recorder, and remove the
chart.
14. Complete the run by cleaning the double recorder and go-devil and
preparing them for storage.
Note
The double recorder is a precision instrument. It is important to
clean your hands before handling the double recorder. For other
important handling instructions, see “Double recorder handling and
storage instructions” on page 15.
2. Remove the chart, envelope, and double recorder from the instrument
box.

base
Include the time required to prepare the double recorder and go-devil at
the surface — usually about 1½ minutes without accessories. If
accessories are used, include extra time for setting up the accessories.
■ Descent time
Include the time it will take the go-devil to descend into the hole to the
point at which the recording will be made. This time period varies
according to the running method used and the condition of the drilling
mud.
• If the go-devil is dropped freely into a mud-filled drillpipe (as with
Running Methods 2 and 3), it descends at the rate of 750 to 1,000 feet
per minute. In this case, calculate the descent time based on an
assumed rate of 750 feet per minute.
• If the go-devil is run into the drillpipe on a measuring line or sand
line, running speed is typically between 500 and 750 feet per minute.
In this case, calculate the descent time based on an assumed rate of 500
feet per minute.
■ Settling period
Note
A tandem double recorder requires more time than shown in the
examples.
Example 1
Preparation 1½ minutes
Settling 1 minute
Example 2
Preparation 1½ minutes
Settling 1 minute
Note
The minimum timer interval you can set is 5 minutes; the maximum is
60 minutes.
2. Carefully rotate the lower dial counterclockwise until the index mark
beside the time interval you want lines up with the setting mark. (The
markings are in minutes, but you can set the timer to approximately the
nearest half-minute.)
Caution Turn the dial slowly and carefully to be sure you do not
overshoot the mark for the interval you want, because you
cannot turn the dial back. For example, if you want to set a
10-minute interval but you accidentally turn the dial beyond
the 10 mark, you cannot turn it back to 10—you will have to wait
for the time to run down.
4. Cock the chart head by using your thumbs to rotate the cocking dial (the
upper dial) 2 full turns counterclockwise, until rotation stops.
Note
Be sure to rotate the dial 2 full turns.
2 full turns
Note
The angle indicator and timing element of each double recorder are a
matched set. Do not interchange the angle indicator and timing element
with equivalent parts from other double recorders.
1. Insert the timing element into the angle indicator section of the double
recorder.
2. Using only your hands — not a tool such as a wrench — grip the knurled
section of the timing element and tighten the timing element into the
angle indicator tube.
knurled section
Attach the threaded pin of the assembled double recorder to the shock
absorber by holding the shock absorber with one hand and turning the double
recorder with the other hand.
Important
Use only your hands to tighten for a snug fit—do not use any tools
(such as a wrench).
Note
Before you use the go-devil, see “Go-devil handling and storage
instructions” on page 21.
Insert the double recorder and shock absorber part way into the go-devil.
(Do not insert them completely into the go-devil yet.)
2. While turning the wrench portion of the sealing packer tool to tighten the
rubber packer, hold the packer snugly against the seating shoulder outside
the go-devil by grasping the tool’s outer sleeve.
Note
Make sure the packer is snugly against the seating shoulder before
you tighten the packer or the rubber may be expanded in the thread
section and prevent proper shouldering of the upper container plug
(which you’ll install next).
Note
When you tighten or loosen connections, use only wrenches supplied
with the go-devil in order to avoid damaging the go-devil and plug
mating shoulders.
The backup wrench is 4. Using the backup wrench to hold the go-devil at the lower container plug,

System equipment box.
amount of torque you would use to tighten automobile wheel nuts.)
Note
Use only wrenches supplied in the equipment box. Do not use tongs
or pipe wrenches.
Use the procedure to run the go-devil down the hole that is appropriate for the
running method you are using. (“Drift Indicator System running methods” on
page 23.)
Taking a reading
The recorder automatically takes a reading after the time you set elapses. (See
“Choosing the timer interval” on page 53 and “Setting the timer” on page 55.)
2. Thoroughly wash the go-devil with clean water and dry it with a clean
cloth. (See “Cleaning the go-devil” on page 71.)
5. Take off your gloves and clean your hands before you remove the double
recorder.
8. Remove the chart from the double recorder by inserting the point of the
chart tool in the small hole in the side of the chart head and pushing the
chart out of the chart head.
Note
To avoid losing the chart, place your fingers over the chart while you
are removing it.
2. Reassemble the timing and angle indicating elements, and place the
double recorder in the Drift Indicator System equipment box.
3. Place the shock absorber in the go-devil for storage, as described in “Go-
devil handling and storage instructions” on page 21.
2. Point the chart reader toward a light source and read the inclination angle
through the reader’s magnifying glass. (If both perforations on the chart
give the same reading, the reading is correct.)
3. Enter the hole inclination and other information on the chart envelope.
Place the chart in the envelope and file the envelope.

Interpreting readings
Interpreting readings
Important
It is important to take deviation readings systematically, at regular intervals.
10’ 0° 0°
30’ 5’ 15’
0° 15’ 30’
15’ 1° 1°
5’ 1°20’ 45’
0° 2° 20’
A B C
A. All forces acting on the drill bit are under control, and full drilling
efficiency and speed can be safely maintained. The readings indicate
no increasing curve or sustained inclination.
B. Readings indicate a curve of increasing angle, which must be
corrected.
C. The angle has been broken and a curve of decreasing angle has been
established, indicating that the course of the hole is about to be brought
under control.
Protecting equipment
The Drift Indicator System includes two equipment boxes: one for the double
recorder and one for the go-devil. Always keep the instruments and their
components and tools in the equipment boxes between jobs or when you
transport them between rigs.
If necessary, you can clean the equipment boxes with a brush or with a rag
dampened with cleaning solvent.
Do not wash any part of the recorder with water, solvent, or fluid of any kind.
See “Disassembling the When the double recorder and the shock absorber are removed from the
go-devil and removing go-devil after a run, immediately wipe them clean with a clean, dry rag. After
the chart” on page 64.
the recorder chart is removed, complete the cleaning process as follows:
1. Remove dirt from the exterior of the angle indicator and timing element
with a fine bristle brush.
2. Holding the double recorder with the opening down (to prevent dirt from
getting inside), clean the inside threads of the double recorder tube with a
brush.
3. If necessary, remove oil-laden dirt from the inside or outside of the tube
by using a cloth dampened with an approved cleaning solvent.
Note
Do not allow solvent to touch the recording mechanism or angle
indicator.
At these locations, sparingly apply dry film lubricant before screwing the
parts together.
After the go-devil is retrieved from the drillpipe, clean the go-devil as
described in the next sections.
4. Bounce the go-devil on its point a few times to make sure the spring is
free for the next run.
5. Clean the go-devil threads and all box and pin ends with the two thread
brushes provided in the go-devil equipment box.

2. Insert the hook end of the puller/cleaning rod (included in the go-devil
equipment box) into the go-devil tube and pull out the return spring.
3. Attach the go-devil brush to the rod and brush out loose particles.
4. Wrap a clean, dry cloth around the tool hook and thoroughly swab inside
the go-devil until the surface is clean and dry.
5. Reinstall the return spring in the go-devil tube with the flared end of the
spring down.
CautionBe sure to position the return spring in the go-devil with the
flared end down. If not, the double recorder may not be
properly protected from shock, resulting in incorrect readings
or damage to the recorder.
Use the round end of the puller/cleaning rod to push the return spring into
place at the bottom of the go-devil tube. When the spring is properly
seated, it compresses and expands freely. Use the puller/cleaning rod to
test this action.
To see if the shock absorber is working properly, push down and pull out the
spring-loaded piston rod (15) in the tube (7).
Note: These
instructions are for the
old-style shock
absorber. There is no
testing procedure for the
new-style shock
absorber (see page 98). sealing packer

2. Remove the piston rod and components attached to the piston rod.
3. Check to see if holes in the flange of the piston (5) are clean.
If this O-ring needs to be replaced, remove the piston (5) from the end of
the piston rod (15) by removing the pin (4).
Note
You’ll need a new pin (part number ASP 8189-007) in order to
reassemble the piston.
5. Check all O-rings (2, 3, and 10), the bumper (13), and the packing seal
(20) for wear and damage.
After each run, clean the threads of the go-devil tube and upper container plug
and lightly lubricate them with a small amount of silicone lubricant.
Notes
Do not use an excessive amount of lubricant, or it may run down the
tube and impair the operation of the double recorder.
The AOI Instrumentation Angle Test Kit (p/n ASK 8414) provides a quick
method for determining whether or not the double recorder is providing
accurate readings.
1. Place the test stand on a level surface and adjust the balance screws until
the two bubbles indicate that the test plate is level.
2. Select the correct holding tube assembly for the recorder. Place the
holding tube in the socket of the bearing that corresponds to the type of
double recorder you are testing.
3. Prepare and set up the double recorder, setting the timer interval for 5
minutes and using a clock or watch with a second sweep as a control
timer. (See the section “Preparing to set up the double recorder” on page
50 and the sections following it through “Assembling the double
recorder” on page 57.)
4. Place the double recorder in the holding tube, oriented the same way it
would be in a go-devil.
5. After the timing device has activated both times, compare the time on the
watch with the time on the double recorder. For the 5-minute test, allow
15 seconds tolerance.
6. Remove the chart and observe it in the chart reader. (See “Disassembling
the go-devil and removing the chart” on page 64 and “Using the chart
reader to read the hole inclination” on page 66.)
The punch marks should be on the center line of the appropriate angle circle.
If the punch marks are outside the circle by 1/16 inch (0.06) or the deviation
between the two punch marks exceeds 1/16 inch (0.06), send the double
recorder to AOI Instrumentation for repair.
