DFMA
(Design for Manufacturing and Assembly)
Supplier Manufacturing Feasibility Commitment

General:

1. DFMA is used to minimize product cost through

design and process improvements, specifically
early optimization of the design and
manufacturing process, and to ensure the
product can be manufactured as specified by the
supplier.
2. DFMA should consider all things relevant to the
manufacture and assembly of the systems, sub-
systems and components pertinent to your subject
product.
3. It is the advance prerequisite for moving from early
design to Engineering Validation, to Design
Validation, to Production Validation.
4. DFMA can be in several forms: Written questions
and answers, Power Point with pictures and
drawing views, spreadsheets, tables and graphs,
drawings, sketches, CAD, etc.
5. DFMA is a shared responsibility with design,
manufacturing, and supplier base.

Specific Objectives of DFMA

Design Entity with Manufacturing Consult:
1. Verify design tolerances are achievable, logical, and not more stringent than
necessary to allow the component to function within the tolerance stack up of
the assembly above it. Remember increased tolerance usually equals increased
cost.
2. Reduce the total number of parts in the design.
3. Develop a modular design.
4. Use standard commercial components (including fasteners) where possible.
5. Avoid too numerous and expensive (special) fasteners.
6. Design parts to be multi-functional (perform multiple design tasks).
7. Design parts for multi-use (use same parts across design platforms where
possible).
8. Design for ease of fabrication.
9. Minimize assembly directions.
10. Maximize compliance during assembly (lead-in, chamfer, alignment).
11. Ensure drawings contain indicators for CTQ (Critical to Quality), Critical and
Significant Characteristics and indicators for critical and reference dimensions.
12. Design for ability to inspect parts (Logical datums and reference points, consider
available measurement tools).
13. DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) performed by the design entity.

Manufacturing Entity with Design Consult:

1. Verify if all Engineering Performance specifications can be met.
2. Verify access to and familiarity with all reference technical specifications.
3. Verify tolerances as specified are achievable, logical, and not more stringent than
can be produced on production level equipment.
4. Verify material is accessible, meets specifications, and can be obtained to meet
production quantities.
5. Verify all welding requirements can be met, performed, and tested properly.
6. Review General Notes for omissions, errors and ask for clarification if necessary.
7. Determine if jigs and fixtures will be required to meet specifications of finished
product.
8. Minimize handling repeatedly and handling difficulty (set-ups, size, weight,
shape).
9. PFMEA (Process Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) performed by the
manufacturing and/or assembly entity.
10. Make recommendations concerning design that would enhance the design,
manufacturability, ease of assembly and reduce costs.
11. Discuss preliminary shipping and packaging requirements and details with
customer location.
12. Perform Mold flow analysis, if applicable.
13. Provide proposals for cavity layouts, ejector pin locations, runner layouts, etc. if
applicable.

Feasibility Considerations:

Aristocrat requests all suppliers to carefully analyze and determine the ability to commit to the
requirements specified on Aristocrat Engineering documentation prior to acceptance of
production purchase orders. The drawings and/or specifications provided have been used as a
basis for analyzing the ability to meet all specified requirements. All “no” answers are supported
with attached comments identifying concerns and/or proposed changes to enable meeting the
specified requirements.

Yes No Consideration
Is the product adequately defined to enable a manufacturing feasibility evaluation?
Can Engineering Performance & Testing Specifications be met as written?
Can the product be manufactured to tolerances specified on drawings?
Can the product be manufactured with a minimum 1.33 Cpk for ALL Significant
Characteristics or Critical Characteristics (SC’s & CC’s)?
Is there adequate capacity to produce the product?
Can all color and appearance requirements be met?
Will the product require new manufacturing capital? If so, attach plan.
Have all tooling, Gauge & Fixture costs and requirements been identified?
Can all the electrical and physical safety requirements be met?
Have the appropriate manufacturing engineers reviewed and agree to the above?
Have the appropriate quality engineers reviewed and agree to the above?
Have all specifications and drawing been reviewed?
Does supplier understand and agree to all Aristocrat quality requirements per the
Aristocrat Hardware Engineering Supplier Requirements Manual including:
 Supplier Quality System
 Part and Process Qualification Request for Concessions
 Use and deployment of the APQP
Conclusion
Feasible: Product can be produced as specified with no changes.

Not Feasible: Design changes are required to produce the product within specified
requirements. (Supplier to attach changes that are required.)
