For the David Livingston Trust, we felt that these three distinct factors were required to produce
the best play area for the site, for the community and for the children.

WOW STAY DEVELOP

The wow is provided in the form of scale. The centre piece of your play space is
the ‘Explorer Ship’. This is a piece of play equipment that will blow everyone’s
mind, not only the kids! We have name her after the paddle steamer that David
Livingstone used to navigate the Zambezi River, ‘Ma Robert’! She provides a
huge amount of fun and imagination to children who, just like David Livingstone,
have a deep sense of adventure and a need to discover. We have placed her,
naturally, within the Zambezi river of wet pour, that runs through our play chip
Africa. She has to manoeuvre past crocodiles and elephants to reach Victoria
falls, which swirl you round and round in the form of the sit on carousel. The
whole experience is escalated by the sound of the falls coming from the rain
wheel, and the authentic music provided by the Marimba. Once you’ve
discovered the river, you can relax for a while and swing amongst the trees in
your very own jungle hammock! Or why not explore the river banks, find hidden
houses and herds of animals... Can you count how many?! How about surfing
the Zambezi waves? Formed with soil and covered in turf, these mounded waves
proved casual seating, further play opportunities, or a place to sit and have a
picnic while on a class trip! They bridge the gap between the landscaped
environment and the play area, allowing an informal barrier to be formed.
The stay is reflected in pure play value of the equipment chosen for the site. We
have made sure to choose items that will engage the users for hours on end, and
entice them to come back and discover more! The African River theme fuels the
imagination of children and encourages dramatic play and is supported by the
addition of the ‘Ma Robert’. We will transport children back to when David
Livingston was alive, and helps them imagine the adventures he went on! The
robinia material evokes a jungle theme, and by adding robinia palm trees and
having Africa depicted within the surfacing, this play space is the perfect place to
let their imaginations soar. With all the animals in the play area, each offers their
own unique play value. With springing and see-sawing, tactile and social play,
the whole space becomes a hug of chatter and fun. By choosing the sit on
carousel as the sole spinner on this site, we not only appeal to the older children
likely to take risks, but the less able and younger kids. The ability to life a child
onto it enables them to feel the spinning sensation, without feeling unsafe! This
goes for the hammock too. It is the perfect way to introduce swinging, without
having the expense of extra space. As well as all the physical activities within the
play space, we have allowed for sensory items too; The rain wheel is a fantastic
product that provides subtle sound when you spin the wheel. This can be used
by everyone with great success! The Marimba can also be used by everyone,
this provides very authentic African sounds that will transport you into a different
world!
The ship provides a whole variety of play activities that encompass imagination,
cross coordination, balance, social and cooperation skills. These all aid in the
development of children both physically and socially. With many access points
including ropes and climbing walls, children can challenge themselves, no
matter what their abilities. The areas below deck offer spaces to play, pretend
and socialise, meaning children with less mobility can be involved too.
With the addition of the robinia play house, we offer children with less physical
ability to discover themselves and their own abilities. They can egress through a
less daunting slide, or play within the lower level play house, making the play
area a space for all to develop.
By including various references to the main exhibition within the birthplace we
allow children to learn through play too. The information boards at the beginning
will be created in close conjunction with the birthplace itself, and can aid in
educating children on the life of David Livingston. As well as this, there is option
for future development of the site, adding seating areas and an educational trail
through the long grass, providing children with activities and treasure hunts
within the place area itself!

Each play area has its own characteristics and

50 years ago, a young Danish artist named Tom Lindhardt witnessed
an event that changed the world of children’s play.
One of his large, brightly coloured sculptures had been placed in a
new housing estate to add colour to the otherwise drab surroundings.
Realising that children were more interested in playing on it than
admiring it, Lindhardt decided to start his own play equipment
company – KOMPAN.

We have studied child development and children’s
outdoor play for four decades

The KOMPAN Play Institute is dedicated to conducting research, making user

workshops, developing and testing with users, and making sure that innovative
projects represent the KOMPAN WOW-STAY-DEVELOP play philosophy.
From the research centres in Denmark and U.S., KOMPAN Play Institute work
with an international network of universities and child-experts to study research,
conduct observation studies of children playing, and test new product concepts on

Universal Design Philosophy
KOMPAN has a well established tradition
of universal and inclusive design. All
children, including children with
disabilities, are considered when a
KOMPAN product or play space is made.
One of the four main points in KOMPAN’s
play philosophy is “Play Together”, which
encompasses the idea, that all children
and adults should be included in play no
matter what their ability. This philosophy
is continually demonstrated in our
designs. KOMPAN designs have many
openings and details which support play
exchange from the inside to the outside
of a product. These design assets create
a play space both in and around the
product resulting in very open designs,
creating opportunities for play across all
abilities.

Play panels
The 19mm EcoCore™ panels are a highly durable, eco-friendly material, which
is not only recyclable after use, but also consists of a black core produced from
100% recycled post-consumer material from food packaging waste.
The new dark teal EcoCore™ panels, used in KOMPAN GreenLine products,
are made of 100% recycled post-consumer ocean waste.
Posts
Main posts are available in four different materials.
1. Impregnated pine wood with in-ground steel footing.
2. Galvanised steel with powder-coated top finish.
3. Colour-anodised lead-free aluminium, made from low-carbon aluminium.
4. TexMade™ posts made from 100% post-consumer recycled textile and
plastic waste.
Decks
All decks are supported by uniquely designed low-carbon aluminium profiles
with multiple attachment options. The grey-coloured moulded decks are made
of 75% post-consumer ocean waste PP material with a non-skid pattern and
texture surface.
Galvanised steel
Our steel surfaces and steel frames consist of a hot-dip galvanised inside and
outside with lead-free zinc according to global safety standards for playground
equipment. The galvanisation has excellent corrosion resistance in outside
environments and is maintenance-free.
Ropes
Ropes come with galvanised six-stranded steel wires and a steel core,
impossible to wear through. Each strand is tightly wrapped with PES yarn,
which is melted onto each individual strand, making the ropes highly wear
and vandalism-resistant.
Robinia wood
Robinia wood is a very strong and long-lasting material with a very high level
of natural oils. Thus Robinia wood makes very durable playgrounds which
are close to maintenance-free and able to last for many years.

Warranty coverage
This warranty applies to KOMPAN’s products and spare parts for the time periods
described for each product type above and with the limitations described in this
warranty. The warranty period applies from the date of purchase by the first
customer. This warranty covers only defects in materials. KOMPAN’s liability
under this warranty is limited to repair or replacement of defective products,
without charge, at KOMPAN’s discretion. Defective electronic components will be
delivered and changed by a KOMPAN ICON Professional installer free of charge.
Proper installation and maintenance
The warranty only applies if KOMPAN’s products have been installed according to
the instructions provided by KOMPAN and maintained correctly according to the
KOMPAN Maintenance Manual. All warranty claims shall be accompanied by full
documentation for proper installation and maintenance. The warranty for the ICON
electrical components is dependent on those products being installed by an ICON-
trained and approved installer.
Warranty exclusions
This warranty does not cover any damage caused by accident, improper care,
negligence, normal wear and tear, surface corrosion on metal parts, discoloured
surfaces and other cosmetic issues or failures due to misuse or vandalism.
Natural changes in wood over time are considered cosmetic issues and are not
covered.
Near water installations
Products installed in direct contact with chlorinated water or saltwater
(Waterparks), or products installed within 200 metres from the shore are not
covered by the KOMPAN warranty for any defects caused by corrosion. Specially
designed products (handled via the department for customised products),
provided they have been upgraded to corrosion class C4 prior to delivery, installed
within 200 metres from the shore (and not in direct contact with saltwater/spray of
saltwater or chlorinated water (e.g. water parks)) shall, subject to the applicable
warranty period for each product type set out in the general warranty, be covered
only against structural failure caused by corrosion (excluding moving parts) and
under no circumstances for any period longer than 10 years.
Third-party supplied products & services
KOMPAN provides non-KOMPAN branded products and installation services
performed by certified third-party suppliers. This general KOMPAN warranty does
not apply to such non-KOMPAN branded products and installation services, which
may carry their own warranties. KOMPAN will pass on information on such
warranties where possible.
Freight and warehousing
Global transport and logistics arranged by KOMPAN appointed forwarder.
Products/items are not to be stored outside waiting for installation and must be
kept dry at all times.

professional code of conduct and are credit-checked and
monitored regularly for financial stability.
