2 Safety Precautions

2.1 Safety and electro-magnetic interference suppression

MAGNETOMED units have been designed and manufactured in accordance with the cur-
rent DIRECTIVE (93/42/CEE), in order to provide adequate protection against harmful
interference that may damage electrical or electronic appliances used in homes and health
institutions, on the condition that these meet with the provisions of the directive regulat-
ing ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY.
The unit does not feature any internal spare parts or adjustment functions that need to be
handled by the user.

MAGNETOMED 7200 - Service Manual 5

Location

Repairs carried out using non-original spare parts, especially repairs on important safety
components of the unit, may pose a risk of fire or electrocution and may compromise the
functioning of the unit.

Warning For safety purposes, the power cable has been supplied with an earthed plug.
Only use a suitably earthed power supply socket.
The unit must only be connected to approved power supply systems!

3 Location
Installation of magneto-therapy units is quick and simple.
The unit has been designed for installation in indoor environments.
The unit should be installed in a location that conforms to the following environmental
conditions:
• Ambient temperature from + 10°C to + 40°C;
• Humidity level from 10% to 80%, without condensate;
• Avoid direct exposure to sunlight, chemical products and vibrations.
Following a period of storage in a cold place, wait at least 15 minutes before switching on the
unit in order to prevent condensate forming.

Warning Do not use MAGNETOMED 7200 units in places where there is a risk of them coming
into contact with liquids!

4 General Product Description

MAGNETOMED 7200 units, designed for non-invasive therapy treatments, are used mainly
by physicians, physiotherapists and pain therapists.
The unit emits continuous low frequency magnetic fields that are applied to the patient by
means of solenoids.
On first observation the regulating effects of magnetic fields on the endocrine and nerv-
ous system, and especially on endocellular structures and the cytoplastic membrane, are
fairly clear. The latter in particular benefits from the effects of magnetic fields that are
able to modify “altered” ionic distribution and restore it to its normal functioning state.
The main functional characteristics of the unit are as follows:
(1) Two output channels that can be independently adjusted both in terms of intensity
and the type of current emitted.
(2) Expandable therapy programs by means of the Smart Card.

General Product Description

(3) Updating of basic software via personal computer connection.

(4) Table-top case made of two ABS injection moulded sections.
(5) Membrane keyboard with selection keys and encoder for scrolling lists and modify-
ing the waveform parameters and the intensity of the output current.
(6) LCD graphic display (240 X 128 pixel resolution) with menu visualization permit-
ting a choice of operator-personalised therapies or preset memorized therapies.
(7) Microprocessor control board that controls the display interface and keyboard and
contains the preset therapy programme memory as well as the operator –generated
therapy program memory.
(8) One microprocessor power board for generating the current to send to two solenoid
applicators: the board generates the waveform and emission frequency and commu-
nicates the functioning state of the outputs to the control board.

Circuit Descriptions

6 Circuit Descriptions

6.1 CPU board (MI 4.100)

The CPU (MI 4.100) control board uses the M30624 (G) microprocessor to control the
keyboard, the graphic LCD display, the buzzer and the interface for reading the Smart
card.
By means of a bi-directional serial connection (E) it also controls the power board that,
on the basis of the selection indicated by the control board, generates the waveforms and
emission frequencies.
In order to ensure the galvanic separation between the control board and the output
boards, the connection is ensured by means of photo-couplers positioned on the power
boards.
Power is drawn from the CPU supply (MI 4.102) board.
The monochromatic LCD graphic display has a resolution of 240x128 pixels and is back-
lit in order to guarantee easy readability in all kinds of lighting conditions. The contrast
can be adjusted by means of variable voltage generated by the microprocessor.
The board features the following functional blocks:

A Main reset and watch-dog circuit

B Serial interface for external connection (pro-
gramming, computer) C)
C Voltage power supply for display contrast
D Display contrast adjustment
E Serial link for peripheral boards
F Sensor for testing (not used)
G M30624 processor
H Display backlight voltage
I EPROM auxiliary memory

6.2 CPU (MI 4.102) power supply board

This contains a simple linear power supply for powering the logical circuits of the CPU
board.

6.3 Magneto-board (MI 4.106)

The magneto board (MI 4.106) is controlled by the microprocessor MC68HC908 (IC4),
which processes data received from the control board via the opto-isolated serial link
(CN2) and generates the waveforms and emission frequencies.
The magneto board is a phase line control circuit which controls simply the current flow-
ing in a solenoid per channel, controlling the phase angle of the current.

Circuit Descriptions

Warning Never touch circuits of Q1 and Q2 and their associated traces!

They are under line voltage!

For the signal inside the board it is useful to take the voltage pin 2 if IC 2 as reference.
This point is easily accessible and can the first reference for the oscilloscope.
The high level board CPU communicates continuously with the peripheral board using
the serial link CN2 (refer to the attached report). This messages traffic can be seen on pin
5, 6 of IC4. Pin 6 is the receiving side of the peripheral board while Pin 5 is the transmit-
ting side of the board. Each message received is followed by an answer. This activity is
always present, also in idle state.
The signals from IC4 (Photo1 to 4) are sent to the OPTO (IC 7,9) and then to IGBT
Q1,Q2 which controls channels 1 and 2. These signals are present only if the channels are
active (i.e. a therapy running).
Opto IC8 and IC10 give the signals to COIL1,2 which are every moment output to the
CPU as a message for the presence of the inductor. The sync Signal is supplied by TR1
and IC5A,B to Pin 7 of IC4. The sync signal is the start for the phase control. Phase dura-
tion max is 10ms for 50 Hz and 8.33 ms for 60Hz.
The split primary transformer is in parallel.
R28 has a resistance of 39K and R20,21,22,23 have 47 K.
Supply voltage to drive IGBT Q1 and Q2 is limited by Dz1, so across DZ1 there is a volt-
age of about 15V. (Pay attention using insulated interconnection cables).

6.4 Error Codes

The diagnostic program which runs in the CPU when the user chooses the “MAGNETO
TEST” procedure gives two important messages:
• CHANNEL 1 and 2: OK or NOT CONNECTED
• SELFDIAGNOSTIC: OK or ERROR
The self-diagnostic report is important because if the result is “Error”, there is no com-
munication between CPU Board and Magneto Board 4.106-2: Therefore, the message
whether channel 1 and 2 are connected or not is pointless.
If self-diagnostic reports an error, the equipment needs service.

6.5 Dummy Load

For troubleshooting purposes it can be useful to use as dummy load an incandescent

Lamp that has to be connected to the channel Output for an easy visualization of the
board status.

In Trace 2 is the Word ever sent by the CPU, in Trace 2 you can see in order:

No Solenoid connected,
II solenoid connected
I solenoid connected
I+II solenoids connected.

No Solenoid connected, II Solenoid connected
