Cognitive Failure: Absent-mindedness Of The

Grade 12 Learners Of Saint Anthony Academy
Of Guagua, Pampanga Incorporated
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The students' absent-mindedness is one reason they need help connecting in the lesson.

They are physically here, but their mind is absent. Some of the reasons for the students are their

unsolved problems and thinking for their solution on how to solve them, so in the end, they

cannot focus on their studies. Furthermore, the other reason is a need for more interest or

boredom with students in a particular subject.

As stated by the National Sleep Foundation (2019), lack of sleep is one of the reasons for

being absent-minded. Lack of sleep slows students' reaction time, making for other safety-related

risks on paper works and at home. Sleep feeds creativity, synthesizes new ideas, and leads

students to "ah ha" moments. Research shows that we need good sleep to feed our high-level,

innovative thinking and problem-solving abilities. As students sleep, memories are reactivated,

connections between brain cells are strengthened, and information is transferred from short to

long-term. With enough quality sleep, we can become more mindful. Studies suggest that

sleeping shortly after we learn new information helps us retain and recall that information later.

Absent–minded is a natural habit of every student when it comes to discussion and if they are not

interested in a particular subject. This phrase may apply to a few students far from their relatives.

Hence, they may not miss wishing even a single celebration, and even sometimes, when they

have to recall a memory of someone far away and never had the opportunity to visit or even talk

on the telephone, indeed they think they are with them, even just imagination. Whenever close

relatives stay for a long time and return to their homes, we feel lost in this world too. The more

attachment we keep with others, their parting ways bothers us.

However, one of the reasons students are physically present yet mentally absent is a lack

of attention or being conscious of students in other things. WEBMD LLC (2005) , stated that

when students are absent-minded, their conscious processing is focused on something other than

the task.

As stated by Sasson (2001), The main reason for being absent-minded is a need for more focus

and attention. If students' minds are always busy with something else, they ignore what they are doing

now. Students need to remember better what they did when they are not attentive. It is not

forgetfulness, Because if students' mind is somewhere else, no mental note or impression has been

made. If they want to stop being absent-minded, they need to improve their focus and control of their

mind.

Additional information of (Ramez Sasson, 2001), One of the reasons students are absent–

minded is multi–tasked. When students try to accomplish several tasks simultaneously, do not allow

them to focus well on each task, and therefore, they might make errors and mistakes. None of them is

done remarkably well when they do many things simultaneously.
