BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Preventive Maintenance is a regular and systematic inspection, detection, and

correction of possible problems in order to prevent future system failures on a working device.
The following are its aims:

• Ensures that the device operates properly.

• Lessen the likelihood of a system crash or parts failures.
• Prolong the life of the device and its individual components.

By implementing this procedure, it will reduce the device down time, increased data
protection, extend life of the device and its components, increased stability and save on regular
repair and replacement costs.

Two Types of Preventive Maintenance

1. Passive Preventive Maintenance - it consists of precautionary activities to protect the

computer from the environment. Like the following:
• Using power-protection devices such as Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) and
Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR).
• Clean and temperature-controlled environment.
• Preventing excessive vibration.

2. Active Preventive Maintenance - it consists of activities that promote a longer trouble-

free life for the device. Like the following:
• Periodic cleaning of the device and components.
• Performing regular file back-up.
• Scanning of malwares (virus, spyware, and worms).
• Disk cleanup and file defragmentation of hard drives.

Note: Preventive Maintenance procedures can be a hardware and software related or both.

Maintenance Tasks

• Checking cable, component, and peripherals conditions.

Hardware • Replace or repair component that show signs of excessive wear.
• Keeping components clean and on peak condition.

• Review security settings, software, and driver updates.

• Scan and update antivirus or malware software.
Software • Defragment hard drives
• Scan drives for errors.
• Remove unwanted or not used programs.

Safe Environment for Devices

The following are some tips for creating a safe environment for your devices.

• Place the devices and components in a cool and dry place away from direct sun light.
Ideal operating temperature for a device environment is 23°C/73°F.
• Always use an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS), Automatic Voltage Regulator
(AVR) or power surge protector to protect your devices from electrical spikes or power
interruption.
• Provide a good airflow for the system unit to prevent it from overheating.
• Keep your devices from Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), which can cause a
degradation of electronic circuitry inside the device or circuitry failures

Device Cleaning

Cleaning the device is essential to keep it on peak condition, extend its life and make
the files and data safe. A system unit in a normal working environment should be cleaned at
least annually. The table below gives examples of a Preventive Maintenance schedule:

Schedule Component/Device Maintenance

• Clean the interior with compressed air or

blower while use a clean cloth and alcohol
Keyboard
to clean the keys.
• Check and repair for sticky or stuck key.

• Clean the mouse with a microfiber cloth

Monthly Mouse
and alcohol.
• Clean the screen surface using a microfiber
Monitor
cloth and LED/LCD cleaning solution.

• Check for any deterioration, burns or cut on

Extension, AVR/ UPS
the wires and sockets.

• Use an air blower or compressed to remove

Annually System Unit dust or debris. Or use a brush ang a cloth
as an alternative.

Before starting your cleaning activity, make sure that you have gathered all the
necessary cleaning tools and materials. For the review of these tools and materials, you can

ACTIVITIES

Directions: Using your smartphone, tablet, or any recording device. Make a short video tutorial
on how to maintain good functionality of one of the following components or devices
but not limited to (keyboard, mouse, monitor, system unit, or laptop). Keep your
tutorial short with a minimum of 3 minutes and a maximum of 4 minutes. Turn-in
or submit your video on your respective Google Classroom.

Note: The video tutorial should include the following:

• Introduction or description of the opponent or devices
• Tools to use
• Safety precautions
• Procedures

REMEMBER

• A healthy and safe environment can play an important factor in keeping your personal
computer at peak condition. Heat, dust, and humidity can deteriorate your component
rapidly. Accumulation of these elements can slow down the performance of your system
and eventually lead to system failure. So regular inspection, detection, and correction
can greatly lessen or prevent future system failures.

• Preventive Maintenance procedure may include maintaining the device’s cleanliness,

incorporating regular backup of files, and scanning for viruses and other malicious
programs.

• Use the necessary Electrostatic discharge (ESD) tools every time you perform the
maintenance inside any device.
