CAAP upgrades air traffic system

By: Niña P. Calleja
Philippine Daily Inquirer / 05:23 AM January 21, 2015

MANILA, Philippines–The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has upgraded its 19-year-old air
traffic management system, which is seen to improve air traffic control, especially during the rainy season.
The aviation authority on Tuesday unveiled the P159.9-million upgraded Eurocat air traffic management system
which replaced the old outdated one which had been in place since 1996.
The system is a computerized air traffic control and management solution that controls en route, overflights,
arriving and departing air traffic from as far as 250 nautical miles.
CAAP director general William Hotchkiss III said that before the upgrade, flights at the Ninoy Aquino
International Airport, particularly during rainy periods, are affected by outages resulting in f light cancellations
or diversion.
He said the aging system had outlived its life span of 19 years and parts are already obsolete and unavailable for
replacement.
Undertaken in partnership with Thales Australia and Pacific Hemisphere Development, the systems upgrade was
inaugurated and blessed at the airways facilities complex at the CAAP central office in Pasay City.
Hotchkiss and deputy director general for operations Gen. Rodante Joya with Raymond Lions, branch manager
of Thales Australia’s Philippine branch office, Roger Ferrari of Pacific Hemisphere Development and other
officials attended the launch.
According to CAAP, the total cost of the project was pegged at P159.9 million.

B. Read the following paragraphs very carefully. Highlight the topic (example: the dangers of living
alone) and underline the main idea of each paragraph. If the main idea is implied, write it on the space
provided. (25 points)

There is a common belief that while the dog is man’s best friend, the coyote is his worst enemy. The bad reputation of
the coyote traces back to his fondness for small animals; he hunts at night and is particularly destructive to sheep,
young pigs, and poultry. Yet it is sometimes wise to encourage coyotes. Provided valuable farm animals are protected,
the coyote will often free the property of other animals, like rabbits, which are ruinous to crops and certain trees. He is
especially beneficial in keeping down the rodent population. Where coyotes have been allowed to do their work without
molestation, ranchers and fruit growers have found them so valuable that they would no more shoot them than they
would shoot their dogs.

The United States seems to be in love with the idea of going out to eat. Because of this, a real variety of restaurants
has come about specializing in all kinds of foods. McDonald’s is the king of a subgroup of restaurants called fast-
food restaurants. Chances are, no matter where you live, there is a McDonald’s restaurant near you. There are
even McDonald’s in the Soviet Union. Now McDonald’s is trying something new. It is called McDonald’s Express
and there is a test site in Peabody, Massachusetts. It is part of a Mobil gas station. This allows you to fill up with
gas and fill up on food at the same time. What will they think of next?

Most teenagers and young adults do not know what they want to do for the rest of their lives. It is a big decision.
There are a number of things you can do to narrow the choices. For example you can take an interest test, do some
research on your own about a career, try volunteer work in the field in which you are interested, or “job-shadow”,
in which you spend a day with a person who is working in a field that interests you. These are just a few helpful
ideas as you begin to choose a career.

The Louisiana Purchase proved to be one of the shrewdest business pacts in the entire history of the United States.
The purchase doubled in the area of the country and provided territory from which fourteen new states were created
either wholly or in part. It also gave us control over the mouth of the Mississippi River and opened up the way to
foreign trade. Prior to the purchase, the waterway had been blocked by the Spanish, probably with the approval of
Napoleon. The land that was bought was rich in timber, minerals, and natural resources of many kinds. Finally,
the cost of the transaction was unbelievably low; the total of $15 million amounted to about four cents an acre.

The fact that electronic computers are now used for data processing has led the general public to believe that it is
a mysterious, complicated science and that the computers are giant brains. Both of these ideas are false. A
computer is basically just a high-speed adding machine that performs the functions it is told to. If the input data
are varied even a little, the computer is unable to operate until it is programmed to accept the variations. The
business operations it performs are impressive only because of the extremely high speed of manipulation, but most
of these operations have been used for decades. Unlike man, the computer performs repetitive calculations without
getting tired or bored.

The Child’s Wish Granted

By George Parsons Lathrop

Do you remember, my sweet, absent son,

How in the soft June Days forever done
You loved the heavens so warm and clear and high;
And when I lifted you, soft came your cry,----
“Put me ‘way up---‘way, ‘way up in blue sky”?
I laughed and said I could not;---set you down,
You gray eyes wonder-filled beneath that crown
Of bright hair gladdening me as you raced by.
Another Father now, more strong than I,
Has borne you voiceless to your dear blue sky.

1. The poem is all about…

- A father talking to his dead son

Online classes, on the other hand, do not offer face-to-face interaction and they are more limited in their
instruction methods, yet they offer greater flexibility for scheduling. The interaction between teachers and
students in an online class is typically time-delayed, meaning that students send an email and wait for a
response. Interaction with classmates is less personal than it would be in a traditional class because when
student-to-student interaction is required, it is typically limited to email or an online discussion board. The
method of instruction in online classes is typically limited to videos and reading articles that can be sent to
students electronically. Many of the hands-on experiences that students get in a traditional class are virtually
impossible to have in an online class. Rather than being able to touch and feel rocks in the geology class,
students will be limited to videos or pictures of rocks. The scheduling is very flexible. Students typically enroll
in online classes because they need the ability to take classes at night, early in the morning, or even during
their lunch break at work. The pace of online classes is typically determined by the students, so their personal
and work schedules do not need to be completely changed. While the interaction and instruction may be
limitations of an online class, the scheduling is very flexible.

Summary:

Online classes, on the other hand, do not offer face-to-face interaction and they are more limited in their
instruction methods, yet they offer greater flexibility for scheduling. And the interaction of students,
teachers is less time-delayed than face-to-face. Many of the hands-on experiences that students get in a
traditional class are virtually impossible to have in an online class. The online classes are convenient
since the schedule is flexible. The pace of online classes is typically determined by the students, so their
personal and work schedules do not need to be completely changed.

Paraphrase:

Online classes, on the other hand, do not provide face-to-face connection and have fewer instructional
approaches, but they provide more scheduling freedom. In an online class, the interaction between
teachers and students is usually time-delayed, which means that students write an email and wait for a
response. Because the student-to-student connection is often limited to email or an online discussion
board, interaction with classmates is less personal than it would be in a regular class. In most online

classrooms, the manner of education is confined to videos and reading articles that can be provided to
students electronically. Many of the hands-on experiences that students acquire in traditional classes are
nearly impossible to replicate in an online program. Instead of touching and feeling rocks in geology
class, students will be limited to watching movies or looking at photographs of rocks. The schedule is
extremely adaptable. Students enroll in online classes because they want to be able to take lessons late
at night, early in the morning, or even during their lunch break at work. Students often set the pace of
online programs, so their personal and professional calendars do not need to be fully altered. While an
online class may have limits in terms of interaction and instruction, the scheduling is quite flexible.
