Wasting water carelessly is a common scenario in Bangladesh.

Describe the
increasing demand for freshwater with examples in the context of Bangladesh.
In your opinion what steps can be taken to ensure proper water conservation in
our country?

Every human being can realize the paramount significance of freshwater. No textual or vocal
advocacy is needed as there is none who will rebut the significance of freshwater. Yet being
aware of this aspect, the people of our country cause water wastage on countless occasions
each day.  From a minimum scale wastage of leaving a tap open to a large scale wastage of
polluting the sources of water such as rivers, we can find every kind of blatant misuse of water.

Daily activities are an indicator of people becoming oblivious of the importance of freshwater.
Discussing the increasing demand of freshwater in the context of Bangladesh will once again
illustrate how much water wastage is hampering us as a nation.

In Bangladesh, demands of freshwater are escalating due to insufficiency of water as a result of

the constantly growing population which has already gone beyond the limits. We have less
water at our disposal than required, thus creating a situation where equal availability of water is
absent. Water is used for domestic purposes such as cleaning, washing, cooking etc. so, a rise
in population is producing more users but our water sources are not expanding proportionately.
More inhabitants mean the food chain has to render more production to the people so water is
needed more than ever for irrigation purposes. Ours being an agricultural country without water,
farming and other activities are impossible. Although we are now focusing on strengthening our
industries, once again we are reminded of the demand for freshwater. After irrigation, water is
most used for industrial purposes such as for filtering, producing products and packaging. So, to
realize our dream of being an industrialist country, demand for freshwater is only going
upwards. In order to meet the demands of energy, we need additional quantities of water to
produce electricity by which our industries are run and our household and daily lives are
dependent upon. Often Bangladesh becomes victims of natural disasters caused by climate
change and to tackle calamities such as droughts we have no alternative of water.

As an answer to demands of fresh water we must contemplate on the viable solutions. Firstly,
we must change our culture of being ignorant towards wastage of water. If every individual
remains vigilant and a single drop of water is saved by everyone, on average we will be saving
millions of units of water. Secondly, we can construct water storages. Man-made dams in the
soil and banking water in groundwater storages may pay dividends. Thirdly, we must put an
immediate stop to the pollution of water sources such as rivers and canals.  Uncontaminated
water origins will guarantee a consistent delivery of freshwater. Fourthly, we should apply
scientific methods to recycle and reuse waste water or used water. Fifth, we should start using
appliances which eat up less water in our daily lives. Sixth, water management plans and
projects should be drawn at national level and proper administration must exist to supervise the
initiatives.  Lastly, population growth must be reduced.
