Question 1

As a Geotechnical Engineer, your service was hired by a client who lost the original design
calculation of an existing squared footing. The only available information provided by the client
was the permanent and variable actions of 𝐺𝑘 = 1000𝑘𝑁, 𝑄𝑘 = 700 𝑘𝑁 respectively and the
reinforced concrete is 𝛾𝑐𝑘 = 25𝑘𝑁/𝑚3. Having the characteristics design values of the footing
as shown in Fig 1. Below. Using Meyerhof's general foundation theorem. Note: take 𝑞 =
2400 𝑘𝑁

i. Design to determine the length value B of the footing using design approach 2
of Eurocode 7.
ii. Design to determine the utilization percentages of the footing

Question 2

A single steel tubular pile of outer diameter 0.3m, wall thickness of 10 mm and length of 10 m
is driven into dry Loose sand with groundwater table located 5m above the ground surface as
shown in the Fig. 2 below. 𝛾 = 15𝑘𝑁/𝑚3 , 𝛾𝑠𝑎𝑡 = 18𝑘𝑁/𝑚3 , ∅′ = 320 , 𝑐 ′ = 0𝑘𝑃𝑎. Along the pile-
soil interface, assume 𝑘 = 1; 𝛿 ′ = 0.75∅′ , 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑃𝑎 = 100𝑘𝑃𝑎. Assuming that the pile is plugged
and the weight of the soil inside the pile is negligible. Considering the critical depth concept
determine the allowable (permanent) design load on the pile using EC7: DA 1-C1 and C2.
Note: assume driven pile .
