CHAPTER 5

RESEARCH INTERPRETATIONS AND RECOMMENDATION

Interpretation of the studies

From the research “social media and secondary school students performances in

economics in Owerri north local government area, Imo state” can be deduced that

social media has both negative and positive role on students academic

performances.

Social media usage has an adverse/negative effect on the academic

performance of students especially in their study time. Many students get

engrossed using social media and as much get addicted to it, there by

misplacing their priorities or goals. For instance, a lot of students of Uratta

secondary school and above (50%) agreed that social media usage makes them

spend much time online which makes them addicted and don’t concentrate on their

studies.

Another negative or adverse effect on social media is in the aspect of reduction

in the actualization of a full students intellectual quotient (IQ), that is, it reduces

students academic life which makes them perform poorly in the areas like English

grammatical usage. The more students uses shorthand in their chats with friends, it
will unconsciously affect their grammar usage which might or will be very difficult

to correct.

Despite the negative effects of social media, it also has a positive effect in

students academic performances.

Social media has made it more convenient to access information online. Here

students have easy access to information which aids them in their academic

performances. Works of other researchers are accessed and the validity obtained.

Social media has made learning interesting. Here, students are connected with their

lecturers or teachers who host live teachings online, host students debates and all

these has a way of improving students academic achievements.

Recommendations

I will advice the school administrators to always checkmate their students, stating

the objectives while giving students research topics online so as to serve as a

guideline to guide the students so that their priorities will not be misplaced and the

stated objectives achieved.

I also recommend that school administrators should also put a license and

restrictions to students on the time and usage of social media and the teachers
should also know when to tell students to go online for research and not always

telling them to go online.

I also recommend that parents or guidance should checkmate their ward on the

usage of social media when to use their electronic device and when to study so as

to enable and improve their study time.
