The Case of the Missing Ring

Episode 6 : Questioning Paul

Recap
In Episode 5, Detective Bossley interviewed the housekeeper, Maria. Maria can’t wait for Emma and
Paul to get married. Why? She has a crush on Martin, the gardener. What does the gardener have to do
with Emma? Well, it seems Martin has a crush on Emma. This little love
triangle intrigues the detective, but does it bring him closer to finding the
thief? Perhaps the detective will have better luck questioning the groom-
to-be. Does Paul have any reason to postpone the wedding?

Detective’s Tip
Reread the dialogue from Episode 5 before moving on to this lesson.

Don’t beat around the bush!

The term “beat around the bush” means to withhold information on purpose. Even though
Detective Bossley asks specific questions, his suspects sometimes beat around the bush. They don’t
answer directly. It isn’t a good idea to hold back information during an investigation, is it? Detectives
are trained to know when suspects are avoiding a question. Notice how Paul beats around the bush
when the detective questions him about his bride-to-be.
