Introduction
Fig. 1. White Wooden Fence
Fences are made to set limitations over a particular property. But why do homeowners put
a fence around their homes? Some would say that it is used to keep uninvited people or
animals from entering, for protection, or set limitations.
This is similar with the scope, limitation, and delimitation of a research study. How spread,
how large, and to what extent does the topic of your study cover? Why is there a need to
disclose the scope of your study? Why is it important to identify its limitations?
In this lesson, you will understand the basic concepts of formulating the scope and
delimitations of your research.

Unit 3.3: Setting Scope of Quantitative Research
Objectives
In this lesson, you should be able to do the following:
● Identify the scope, limitation and delimitation of the study
● Construct a well-written scope and limitations of your study.
DepEd Competency
Indicate the scope and delimitation of the study. (CS_RS12-Id-e-5)

researcher. If they are not identified at the start, it may pose threats to the internal and
external validity of the study (Price, and Murnan 2004).
Try to analyze this example: if you are tasked to conduct research on the effectiveness of TV
personalities as brand models, what could be the limitations of the study? You could have a
difficult time in finding past studies or literature supporting your findings. You could also
have some biases against the TV personalities. Methodological and personal limitations are
just some of the possible limitations that you have to consider when writing this section of
your paper.

Writing the Scope, Limitation and Delimitation
Clearly defining the limitations and delimitations of the study helps readers to understand
the specific purpose of your study. Here are some useful guidelines in identifying, specifying
and writing the scope, limitation and delimitation of your quantitative study.
● Sample size - Limiting your sample size is one of the most efficient ways to conduct
your study. Especially, if you are under time pressure. If you were given the freedom to
select the number of respondents for your study, choose judiciously and take into
consideration your timeframe for completion.

Unit 3.3: Setting Scope of Quantitative Research
● Access to literature - Especially for science-related and studies that require
examination of archives and special permissions for the review of related literature to
be rigorously created, access to literature can be a limitation to a study. A gap or a
misconception that has been resolved and has generated new recommendations, but
was inaccessible due to restrictions, can lead to a lack of rigor of the scientific study in
question (Moura, 2017).

Studies may be replicated. If you decide to replicate a study, analyze
which parts were included in the scope and delimitations of the
writer.

The research title, objectives, and the statement of the problem must have a unified
theme or idea. You will base your scope and delimitation based on these three
important sections of your quantitative research.

● Scope refers to the general limitations of your study.
● Limitation refers to the uncontrollable and sometimes unforeseeable factors that
can affect the outcome of your study.
● Delimitation refers to the boundaries set by the researcher.
