What type of essay have you worked in the Intermediate English II course? Think
about the purpose, structure, and elements.

Strategy: Intensive reading

In the Intermediate English course II, we learned how to write a three-paragraph


opinion essay: Introduction, one body paragraph, and conclusion. In the opinion essay,
the thesis statement, which is the last sentence of the introduction, is made up of two
elements: topic and claim.
In this academic file, we will focus on how to write an academic expository essay
whose purpose is to provide factual information on a topic rather than to provide the
writer’s opinion.

STUDY SKILL 1:

The Thesis Statement

An expository thesis statement states the topic of your paper and lists the key aspects
of your topic that will be discussed in the essay.

Elements:

THESIS STATEMENT = Topic + Claim + Main points

Rewrite the following thesis statements including two main points to make them
stronger:

1. Global warming has a number of negative effects.

2. Most people who suffer from stress practice yoga.

STUDY SKILL 2:

The body paragraphs

There are three parts to a body paragraph:

 A topic sentence (or key sentence that reflects one supporting point of the
thesis statement)

 Middle sentences
 a middle sentence – explanation and / or example
 a middle sentence - evidence (Who? When?)
 a middle sentence – evaluation of the evidence

 A wrap sentence or linking sentence (This sentence summarizes the main idea
of the paragraph and make it clear how the paragraph links back to the essay
topic).
