“Dual Magisterium”

Job Van Yap

3 ft x 2.5 ft
Mixed Media
2020

Layers of fabric, each positioned so that the other peeks through, centers the rectangular
frame. The surface layer, which immediately captures the onlooker’s eye, made of strips of the
canvas fabric from the remains of the layers behind which produces a tactile texture of roughness
from the primed finish of the fabric. The second and the third layer, although barely introduced
to the audience, contrast the fabric atop by the saturated blues and yellows they possess. An
etched figure is engraved on the surface which paves way for the hidden painting the artist had
previously illustrated.
The mutilation and reorganization of the pieces of this artwork speculates the American
colonial legacy in the context of the Transportation Management System of Cebu City by
investigating the eternal and vital fusion and fission between the idea that collectivist culture
binds Filipinos socially and tear them apart politically.
