Portable Extinguishers

Portable fire extinguishers are classified for use on certain types of fires and are rated for relative extinguishing effectiveness
according to ANSI/NFPA 10-2002 standard for portable fire extinguishers. The fire extinguishment potential (rating) is as determined
by fire tests and is shown in brackets following the model designation.

Dry Chemical Extinguishers-Regular Type

Dry chemical, regular type extinguishers are intended primarily for flammable liquid and electrical fires. They are also effective on
surface textile fires. The extinguishing agent is a dry, sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate or potassium chloride base
powder treated to provide maximum effectiveness.
An extinguisher consists of a container holding the dry chemical, which is either under constant pressure or is pressurized at time of
operation. Dry air, nitrogen or a carbon dioxide cartridge is used for pressure. When the extinguisher is pressurized, a valve controls
the discharge which is in the form of a dense cloud.
The extinguishers are not subject to freezing, and the chemical is treated to minimize caking from moisture.
