Effi pudisti päätänsä, ja kun syntyi pieni vaitiolo, nousi äiti sanoen

kohta ylemmäksi, Stubbenkammeriin päin. Jokin idyllinen paikka
kuusamamajoineen sieltä löytynee, ja ellei löydy, niin onhan aina hotelli
käytettävänämme. Eihän toinen oikeastaan ole toistaan kummempi.»
Effi suostui, ja he saapuivat jo puolenpäivän aikaan siihen majataloon,
josta Innstetten oli vastikään puhunut, ja tilasivat itselleen välipalan.
»Mutta vasta puolen tunnin kuluttua; tahdomme sitä ennen lähteä
kävelyretkelle, Hertha-järveä näkemään. Onhan opas saatavissa?»
»Mitkä kivet?»
»Uhrikivet.»
»Ja eilen se oli sinulla vielä Napolin lahti ja jos jotakin kaunista.»
»Niin, eilen.»

»Niinkö luulet?»
»Luuletko?»
»Luulen, Briest. Sinä luulet, ettei hän voi mitään vettä samentaa.
Mutta sikäli sinä erehdyt. Hän vierii helposti virran mukana, ja jos aalto
on hyvä, on hän itsekin hyvä. Taistelu ja vastarinta eivät ole hänen
asioitansa.»
