Advanced Math Law of Sines [Day 1] Name_____________________________

Notes
 Learning Target: Students will find the area of non-right triangles without drawing an altitude and
without using A = ½ bh. Students will also solve for the sides and angles of a non-right triangle using the
Law of Sines.

Area of a Triangle:

The area of  ABC is one-half the product of the lengths of any two sides and the sine of the included
angle. Draw  ABC. Write the three possible formulas for the area of  ABC.


 

Example: Find the area of a triangle with the following information: Draw it first!

 𝐴 = 62°, 𝑏 = 12 meters, 𝑐 = 5 meters Area = _________________

1
Now, take all three area formulas and divide them by 𝑎𝑏𝑐
2

Law of Sines:

If  ABC has side lengths of a, b, and c as shown, then …



1. Use the Law of Sines to solve the triangle. Round all decimal answers to the nearest tenth.

 A = ___________

b = _____________

c = ______________
2. Use the Law of Sines to solve the triangle. Round all decimal answers to the nearest tenth.
C
B 82°
 A = ___________

3  C = ___________
6
a = _____________

3. Use the information in the diagram below to determine how much closer you live to the music store than
your friend does.

a = _____________

b = _____________

How much closer do you

live than your friend?

4. Use the Law of Sines to solve the triangle. Round decimal answers to the nearest tenth.

 𝐴 = 32.2°, 𝑏 = 21.3, 𝑎 = 34.5  B = ___________

 C = ___________

c = ______________
