What’s the Word?
Rhyme & Rebus Puzzles for 3-Letter Blends
Your students will love using rhyme and rebus clues to solve the word puzzles in this set of 12 task cards! Each card gives rebus clues for a
mystery word’s onset and rime. Children read the clues and solve the word puzzle! All of the cards review and practice words beginning with
three-letter blends. The recording sheet includes a helpful word bank that provides extra spelling support for students who need it. This set is
perfect for Read & Write the Room, centers, independent work, or whole class review activities any time of the year! Print the cards, laminate if
desired, and cut apart. Copy the recording sheet and you’re ready to play. Easy prep for you, maximum engagement for your students!

This set includes:

• 12 task cards (includes both color and black & white sets) Print on cardstock, laminate if desired, and cut apart on the cut lines. I store mine
in a ziplock baggie.
• A recording sheet: Copy enough for each student.
• An answer key
Game Directions:

Whole Class Activities:

• Read & Write the Room. Place or post the cards around the room. Students move around the room alone or with a partner, reading and
solving each puzzle; write the answers on the recording sheet. I conclude the activity by displaying each card using my document camera,
but you can also just read the clues on each card; volunteers share their answers. Discuss the clues for any card where students have
different answers.
• Morning Work or Phonics Warm-up. Give each student a recording sheet. Use a few cards each day for review and practice, displaying your
chosen cards with your document camera. Students work alone or with a partner to solve the puzzles. Call on volunteers to share their
answers. Discuss the clues for any card where students have different answers.
• Whole-Class Review Game. Give each student a recording sheet. Display cards one at a time with your document camera. Students work
alone or with a partner to solve the puzzles. Call on volunteers to share their answers. Discuss the clues for any card where students have
different answers.

Centers or Independent Work:

• Place cards and recording sheets at a center for use during small-group rotations or for students to use during independent work time.
Students read the clues and solve the puzzles (alone, with a partner, or in a small group), recording their answers on the recording sheet.
• Use all of the cards, or divide into two groups, depending on how many puzzles you want your students to do on a given day.
