EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNER

NEXXIOT
Nexxiot is the Excellence Award Winner for Business Expansion this year after the company secured a number
of new contracts to supply its asset intelligence technology.

Nexxiot's platform allows rail freight operators access to the real-time location of equipped railway cars,
monitor total mileage, and shocks and receive notifications if the car sees significant temperature changes. The
platform's sensors and data analytics also help quickly notify operators about adverse conditions to avoid more
damage.

In October 2022 the company signed a deal with Chemet, which makes stationary and transportable pressure
tanks and vessels for liquefied gases, for the digitalization of its railway tank cars portfolio, which, according to
the company makes it the first European manufacturer to completely digitalize its railway tank car offerings.

In November 2022 the company also announced an expansion of its partnership with Austria-based rail logistics
company Innofreight, which would see Nexxiot conclude the digitalization of its complete railcar fleet.
Innofreight already has sensors on more than 1000 railcars. The deal sees the manufacture of new railcars that

21 will also incorporate Nexxiot’s Globehopper connectivity gateway platform.

EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNER

TRANSPOD
TransPod wins the Excellence Award for Innovation this year due to the unveiling of its FluxJet ultra-high-speed
vehicle.

FluxJet is a hybrid between an aircraft and a train and is designed to operate on a ground transportation system
called the TransPod Line. The new electric vehicle can travel in a protected guideway at more than 1,000km/h.

The company has already received $550m in funding from Broughton Capital Group and China-East Resources

Import & Export to develop a route between Edmonton and Calgary in Canada.

The TransPod Line will enable journeys between the two cities in 45 minutes, where currently such journeys take
more than three hours by car.

HUAWEI
Huawei wins the Excellence Award for Product Launches following the launch of two new digital solutions for
the rail industry to accelerate digitalization and improve trackside safety.

The first product launched was the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) which includes
functions including the use of train-to-ground wireless services for train control and dispatch, railway
operations and maintenance (O&M), and railway internet of things (IoT). The solution will also help enhance train
operational efficiency and safety.

In early 2023 the company also unveiled the Smart Railway Perimeter Detection Solution, which aims to improve
trackside safety. The system is based on an optical-vision convergence architecture that facilitates fibre
vibration detection besides analysis to protect railway perimeters with multi-dimensional awareness and high

precision.

EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNER

SIEMENS
Siemens wins the Excellence Award for Research and Development this year due to its involvement in various
technology trials involving automated, systems, AI and hydrogen technology.

In one project the company partnered with Deutsche Bahn (DB), in trialing the Mireo Plus H hydrogen train for
the first time, including a demonstration of the train’s refueling procedure utilizing the mobile hydrogen fueling
station. DB plans to replace diesel-powered trainsets with hydrogen technology in regional transport, as well as
phase out diesel fuel.

Elsewhere the company and several partners launched the ‘safe.trAIn’ research project, which will support
advances in driverless operations for regional trains in Germany. The AI based project will run until the end of
2024 and will focus on the integrated development of testing standards, methods for applying AI to automate

rail transportation, and using example applications to verify the suitability of test standards.

SAFETY

EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNER

METROLINK
Metrolink wins the Excellence Award for Safety following the introduction of an earthquake early warning (EEW)
system along its passenger lines.

The new system is powered by ShakeAlert and will run on seven sections of the company's routes. The EEW
system will be used to automatically alert trains as well as apply the brakes for safe and quick slowing or
stopping of trains in case an earthquake occurs.

This system is based on an interface between the US Geological Survey ShakeAlert and the company’s Positive

Train Control (PTC) system. ShakeAlert is an earthquake early warning system, which helps detect an
earthquake’s location, magnitude and estimated shaking to alert people and systems before the shaking starts.
PTC helps avoid train-to-train collisions, over-speed derailments, as well as other unsafe actions.

Both the systems enable trains to identify and respond quickly to an earthquake, in addition to offering
enhanced data to support inspection of the rail network and resumption of service after an earthquake.

EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNER

NORTHERN RAIL
Northern Rail wins the Excellence Award for Social this year after the launch of a pilot scheme for dementia-
friendly signage.

The scheme was launched at Buxton Station in Derbyshire in the UK and is designed to make signs easier for a
person with dementia to understand. This involved using fewer signs eliminating ‘information overload’, and
having signs strategically placed at important ‘decision points.’

The scheme also includes a wider use of symbols to bolster the wording selected.

The project is a result of Northern Rail’s work with the Friends of Buxton Station and the pair will also gather
feedback from local dementia support groups and individuals on the implementation of the scheme.
