Cluster Shutdown Procedure
Note: If DNS is hosted on VxRail, shutdown of DNS should be performed manually before shutting down
the cluster.
Description:
The VxRail Manager Shut Down Cluster feature provides users a graceful shutdown for the entire cluster
with just a few clicks. During the shutdown procedure, VxRail Manager provides detailed error messages
with links to appropriate knowledgebase articles if there are any problems.
Note: You are responsible for properly shutting down all client VMs. VxRail Manager will shut down all
VMs in the cluster. Dell highly recommends that you gracefully shutdown all client VMs before performing
this procedure.
1. [ ] Open a supported browser and go to the < IP of vSphere vCenter > using HTML5 Client
with administrative privileges.
2. [ ] Go to Home > Hosts and Clusters > VxRail-Cluster.
3. [ ] Right-click the cluster, select VxRail, and then click Shut down….

Note: If any of the pre-shutdown heath checks fail, the shutdown script will not complete. To bypass
known issues, you can select Ignore to bypass any task that is in an Error status. Only use this option
if you know the reason for the failure.
Note: If the time between the current hosts is not synchronized, you will see a warning message
during the cluster shutdown validation process and VXM will automatically synchronize the time
between the hosts.

7. [ ] [Optional] If you are running on a Standard License and have VMs running on VSAN cluster with
the system, clicking confirm displays “Pre-check failed, please resolve the issue(s)
and retry”. Power off the VMs from the VMware vCenter manually, and then click retry to perform
the shutdown.
8. [ ] Click FINISH.
9. [ ] After the appliance has been shut down correctly, a message shows that the appliance shutdown
operation has started. Check the physical node power state after 15 minutes.
10. [ ] Wait for all the LEDs on the appliance to turn off. The locator LED of Node 1 will remain lit after
shutdown completed.
