EASTERLY ASPECT
Carlos Hasham Geography Notes 2018

Map reading
(direction; bearings; AR/GR; gradient; scale),

BEARING IS THREE
DIGIT NUMBER
EXAMPLE: 080O

Area reference
- Use the bottom left hand corner
- Always right the horizontal number first, then the vertical

HORIZONTAL FIRST
THEN VERTICAL
WALK TO THE TREE
BEFORE YOU CLIMB IT

SCALES
1:100 000(cm) = 1CM: 1 KM

1: 50 000(cm) = 1CM:500M
Synoptic Charts
Carlos Hasham Geography Notes 2018

High pressure -Any measurement

above 1013 hPa
Fine and settled
weather H
-An area of sinking air
Low Pressure Any measure below
1013 hPa
Unsettled weather,
which could turn L
-An area of rising air into rain

Symbol Purpose Photo

Isobars -Connect points which share the
same atmospheric air pressure
-Closer the isobars, the stronger
the winds are, because of the
steeper pressure gradient
-If asked for pressure answer in
range
-Measured in hectopascals
(hPa)
Cold Front -Masses of air moving in a
particular direction
-As a cold front passes the
temperature is likely to fall and
rain can occur and wind
direction can change
Warm Front -As a warm front passes the
temperature and humidity
increase and the air pressure
rises

Precipitation -Includes rain, snow, hail and

dew.
-Rainfall is shown using
shading to show areas that have
received rainfall in the past 24
hours

Wind Bar -Shows the direction and speed

of wind
-The number of bars indicate
the speed of the wind

Climate Graphs
Carlos Hasham Geography Notes 2018

Climate graphs are a combination of a bar graph and a line graph. Temperature is shown
on a line graph, with the figures being shown on the right side of the graph. Rainfall is
shown by a bar graph, with the figures being shown down the left side of the graph.
