10. In case of laying LV, MV and communication cables in the same trench, distances between cables must be kept
as per global standards or as per Drawing
11. The cable above ground needs to be protected with safety barricading till the time of termination.

CROWNING

6sqmm Cable laying

1. From drawings & cable schedule, make sure from where to where the cable is to be laid.
2. Lay conduits in cable trench below as per drawing as shown in conduit to avoid water ingress in the
conduit.
3. Unwind the cable from the drum as per site measurement. Note down the starting reading. Pull the cable
through conduits. Care should be taken that cable does not get damaged while pulling cable through conduit due to
friction between conduit and cable. Enough manpower and resources should be deputed so that cable does not get
damaged.
4. Before cutting the cable, note down the ending reading of the cable and
ensure that sufficient length of cable is available for termination at both the ends.

Road crossing for Cables

There are basically three types of road crossing which is available for the project
1) LV cables crossing the road
a. These are those cables which from the LV trench moves towards the LV panel room and the
internal road is in between. For this excavation of the crossing with proper PVC pipe is laid over
which the sub base material is laid and compacted to 95% of the density. The number of cables to
be laid needs to be as per the drawing specified.
2) MV Cables crossing the road
a. These are the cables from one transformer to the other and then to the MCR building
3) LV cables crossing MV cables.
a. These are the found at location where there is crossing between LV cable and MV cable.
4) The final backfilling needs to be done with a crown(25cm) with extra backfilling above the trench so that it
settles in time.

Critical point to be ensured:

 Any cable left above ground needs to be properly barricaded with the ends proper sealed from the
moisture. Also tagging of the ends needs to be done.
 Trench barrications needs to be in place until the completion of cable laying and backfilling to ensure that
no damages to the cable is possible.
 Backfilling of trenches required to be done at utmost careful ensuring that no rocks are in the backfilling
material and the movement of cable needs to be restricted closing the minimum gaps between the cables.

8HIRA AND RISK CONTROL MEASURES

HIRA Laying of underground cables

*Risk management criterion: These must be applied in sequential order for proper
“risk processing”.

a. Eliminate the hazard/risk.

b. Control the hazard/risk at source through the use of engineering controls or
organizational measures.
c. Minimize the hazard/risk by the design of safe work systems, which include
administrative control measures.
d. Where residual hazards/risks cannot be controlled by collective measures,
previsions shall be taken for appropriate personal protective equipment,
including clothing, and other resources (e.g.: training).
