TOPIC 3:

Define the following terms:


1. Discipline- Discipline is specific to academia and a branch of education, a department of
learning or field of knowledge. It has also been termed a field of inquiry characterized by a
unique perspective and a distinct way of viewing a Phenomena (Fawcett, 2012; Rodgers, 2015).
2. Profession- It refers to a specialized field of practice, which is founded upon the
theoretical structure of the science or knowledge of that discipline and the accompanying
practice abilities. It is a learned vocation or occupation that has a status of superiority and
precedence within a division of work.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THEORY FOR NURSING AS A DISCIPLINE


1. University baccalaureate programs proliferated, masters programs in nursing were developed,
and the curricula began to be standardized through the accreditation process.
2. Attention to the importance of nursing conceptualizations for the research process and the role
of a conceptual framework in the purpose and design of research production of science and
nursing theoretical works also began to publish.
3. Works began to be recognize for the theoretical nature, such as Henderson, Nightangle and
Prlando, Peplau, and Wiedenbach were recognized for the theoretical nature of their earlier
writings.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THEORY FOR NURSING AS A PROFESSION
1. Clearly, nursing is recognized as a profession today having used the criteria for a profession to
guide development.
2. Nursing development was the subject of numerous studies by sociologists.
3. The application of nursing knowledge in practice is a criterion that is currently at the forefront,
with emphasis on accountability for nursing practice, theory-based evidence for nursinf practice,
and the growing recognition of middle-range theory for professional nursing practice. (Alligood,
2014)
CRITERIA FOR PROFESSION
1. Utilizes in its practice a well defined and well organized body of knowledge, which is on
intellectual level of the higher training. . (Bixler and Bixler criteria for profession)
2. Has a strong internal organization of members and a well-developed group
consciousness.(Abraham Flexner’s criteria for profession)
3. The services provided are vital to humanity and the welfare of the society.
(Kelly’s(1981) Criteria for profession)
