Objective: The students will be able to calculate and interpret Body Mass

Index (BMI) as a measure of health and wellness.

Subject: Physical Education

Grade Level: Grade 7

Learning across curriculum:

1. Mathematics - Students can apply their knowledge of measurement and

calculations in determining BMI.

2. Science - Students can explore the relationship between BMI and health, as well
as the importance of maintaining a healthy weight.

3. Health - Students can understand how BMI is used as a screening tool for
potential health risks.

Review Motivation:

1. Show pictures of individuals with different body types and ask students to identify
which ones they think have a healthy BMI.

2. Conduct a short survey asking students about their understanding of BMI and their
opinions on its importance.

3. Share success stories of individuals who have a healthy BMI through proper diet
and exercise.

Activity 1: Calculating BMI

Materials: Height and weight measurements, calculators, BMI chart

Instructions:

1. Divide the students into pairs or small groups.

2. Provide each group with a height and weight measurement for a fictional
individual.

3. Instruct them to calculate the BMI using the formula: BMI = weight (kg) / height
(m^2).

4. Ask the groups to refer to the BMI chart to interpret the calculated BMI as
underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.

5. Assign points based on the accuracy of their calculations and interpretations.

Assessment questions:

1. What is the formula for calculating BMI?

2. How can you interpret a calculated BMI using the BMI chart?

Activity 2: Analyzing BMI Data

Materials: BMI data of different individuals, graph paper, markers

Instructions:

1. Provide each student with a set of BMI data for different individuals.

2. Instruct them to create a bar graph or line graph to represent the BMI data.

3. Ask the students to analyze the graph and identify any trends or patterns.

4. Assign points based on the accuracy of their graph and their ability to interpret the
data.

Assessment questions:

1. What type of graph did you create to represent the BMI data?

2. What trends or patterns did you observe from the graph?

Activity 3: Creating a Healthy Lifestyle Plan

Materials: Pen and paper

Instructions:

1. Ask the students to reflect on their own BMI and identify areas for improvement.

2. Instruct them to create a personalized healthy lifestyle plan that includes diet and
exercise goals.

3. Encourage them to set realistic and achievable goals.

4. Assign points based on the completeness and feasibility of their plans.

Assessment questions:

1. What are three specific diet goals you included in your healthy lifestyle plan?

2. How will you track your progress towards achieving your exercise goals?

Analysis: The students were able to accurately calculate BMI and

interpret the results using the BMI chart. They also demonstrated their
ability to create and analyze graphs representing BMI data. Additionally,
they developed personalized healthy lifestyle plans.

Abstraction: The students have learned that BMI is a useful tool in

assessing health and wellness. They understand how to calculate and
interpret BMI and can apply this knowledge in analyzing data and setting
personal health goals.

Application: Provide the students with a real-life problem where they

need to calculate the BMI of a group of individuals and analyze the data
to identify potential health risks. For example, give them the heights and
weights of a sports team and ask them to determine if any players are at
risk of being overweight or underweight.

Assessment: Teachers can assess the learning of the students by

evaluating their accuracy in calculating BMI, interpreting the results,
creating and analyzing graphs, and developing personalized healthy
lifestyle plans. They can also conduct quizzes or tests to assess their
understanding of the concepts related to BMI.
Assignment: Assign the students to research and create a poster or
presentation on the importance of maintaining a healthy BMI. They can
include information on the risks associated with high and low BMI, as
well as tips for achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.
