TOPIC: Cultural Variations and Social Differences in Gender

DEFINITIONS

Cultural variation- Cultural variation refers to the differences in social


behaviors and beliefs among cultures of the world.

Social differences- Social differences are the complex differences and


they include class, race, culture, age, ability, sex etc.

Cultural variation in gender- Culture provides the context in which


gender roles, identity, and stereotypes unfold as well as parameters
regarding sexual behavior.

Examples:

 Greetings
 Food and dining etiquette
 Clothing and fashion
 Religious beliefs and practices
Communication styles

 Art, music, and literature

Gender Expression- External appearance of one’s gender identity, usually


expressed through behavior, clothing, body characteristics or voice.

Gender Identity- One’s innermost concept of self as male, female, a blend of


both or neither – how individuals perceive themselves.

Social differences in gender- Social differences in gender are the


inequalities, gaps, and contrasts that people or groups experience within a
particular social setting based on their gender identification.

 Gender Expectations and Norms


 Political Representation
 Division of Labor

Sexual Orientation- An inherent or immutable enduring emotional, romantic,


or sexual attraction to other people.

5 TYPES OF SEXUAL ORIENTATION


 BISEXUAL- Attracted to genders the same as themselves or
different than themselves.
 HOMOSEXUAL- Attracted to people of one’s own gender.

 PANSEXUAL- Attracted to people of any gender identity.

 ASEXUAL- Not sexually attracted to other people.

 HETEROSEXUAL- Attracted to people of the opposite gender.

SUMMARY

Cultural variations and social differences in gender pertain to how different


cultures and societies perceive, comprehend, and express gender roles,
identities, and expectations. These differences can be seen in gender norms,
actions, and attitudes across cultural contexts. Gender is a complex and
wide term influenced by many different kinds of biological, psychological,
and social factors.
