CVE 221 Engineering Mechanics I: Statics Middle East Technical University

Dr. Ozan Cem Çelik Northern Cyprus Campus

Fall 2015 Civil Engineering Program

Homework #2 — Force System Resultants and Equilibrium of a Particle

Due: Friday, November 6, 2015
1/ Determine the moment produced by each force about point O located on the drill bit. Express the
results as Cartesian vectors.

2/ The tool is used to shut off gas valves that are difficult to access. If the force F is applied to the
handle, determine the component of the moment created about the z axis of the valve.

3/ Determine the required magnitude of force F if the resultant couple moment on the frame is 200
N·m, clockwise.

4/ Replace the distributed loading with an equivalent resultant force, and specify its location on the
beam measured from point A.

5/ Replace the loading by an equivalent resultant force and couple moment acting at point B.

6/ Determine the unstretched length of spring AC if a force P = 400 N causes the angle θ = 60° for
equilibrium. Cord AB is 0.6 m long. Take k = 850 N/m.

7/ Determine the maximum weight of the bucket that the wire system can support so that no single
wire develops a tension exceeding 0.5 kN.

8/ Determine the mass of each of the two cylinders if they cause a sag of s = 0.5 m when suspended
from the rings at A and B. Note that s = 0 when the cylinders are removed.

9/ The shear leg derrick is used to haul the 200-kg net of fish onto the dock. Determine the
compressive force along each of the legs AB and CB and the tension in the winch cable DB. Assume
the force in each leg acts along its axis.

10/ Determine the magnitudes of F1, F2, and F3 for equilibrium of the particle.
