CVE 221 Engineering Mechanics I: Statics Middle East Technical University

Dr. Ozan Cem Çelik Northern Cyprus Campus

Fall 2015 Civil Engineering Program

Homework #1 — Force Vectors

Due: Tuesday, October 27, 2015
1/ If the tension in the cable is 400 N, determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant force
acting on the pulley. This angle is the same angle  of line AB on the tailboard block.

2/ Resolve F2 into components along the u and v axes and determine the magnitudes of these
components.

3/ The beam is to be hoisted using two chains. If the resultant force is to be 600 N directed along the
positive y axis, determine the magnitudes of forces FA and FB acting on each chain and the angle  of
FB so that the magnitude of FB is a minimum. FA acts at 30° from the y axis, as shown.

4/ Determine the magnitude and angle measured counterclockwise from the positive y axis of the
resultant force acting on the bracket if FB = 600 N and 

5/ Express each of the three forces acting on the bracket in Cartesian vector form with respect to the
x and y axes. Determine the magnitude and direction of F1 so that the resultant force is directed
along the positive x axis and has a magnitude of FR = 600 N.

6/ The mast is subjected to the three forces shown. Determine the coordinate direction angles 1,
1, 1 of F1 so that the resultant force acting on the mast is zero.

7/ Determine the coordinate direction angles of F1 and FR.

8/ The chandelier is supported by three chains which are concurrent at point O. If the force in each
chain has a magnitude of 300 N, express each force as a Cartesian vector and determine the
magnitude and coordinate direction angles of the resultant force.

9/ A force of F = 80 N is applied to the handle of the wrench. Determine the angle between the tail
of the force and the handle AB.

BC of the pipe.
