2023/2024 Academic Year Semester I

ASSIGNMENT ONE Due Date: 07 September, 2023

Instruction: Answer the two questions

Question one
The idealized framing plan for a floor system located in the lobby of an office building is shown
in the Fig Q1. The floor is made using 150 mm thickness reinforced concrete with unit weight of
24 kN/m3. If the walls of the elevator shaft are made from 100 mm thick lightweight solid concrete
masonry with density of 16.5 kN/m3 and has a height of 3 meters.
Plot the shear and bending moment diagrams for the beam AB and determine the maximum
moment in the beam. Consider all members to be simply supported and Neglect the weight of the
members.

Question two
The canopy shown in the photo provides shelter for the entrance of a building. Consider all
members to be simply supported. The bar joists at C, D, E, F each have a weight of 1.2 kN and
that of A and B are of 2 kN each and are 6 metres long. The roof is 100 mm thick and is made of
lightweight concrete having a density of 17 kN/m3. The roof live load is uniformly distributed and
is 2 kN/m2. Assume the concrete slab is simply supported between the joists. Calculate the loadings
on the members due to all the actions. Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the side girder
AB due to dead and live loads on it. The side girder AB is made of steel with cross-sectional area
of 150 cm2 and unit weight of 77 kN/m3.
