The Proposed ROTC Program

Apart from being prepared for times of war, having leadership skills, being patriotic and nationalistic, etc., the
Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) is required, and the main goal of this is to instill discipline in those who
participate. This discipline will be carried throughout their participation in this type of training. Nowadays, most
students, especially teenagers, lack discipline. For instance, instead of assisting their parents with household tasks
and caring for their younger siblings, teenagers choose to hang out outside with their friends and engage in foolish
behaviour. Due to his or her stubbornness, this attitude can occasionally stress out or produce problems for his or
her parents. Secondly, to be a capable leader. The youth, according to Dr. Jose Rizal, are the country's future
leaders, and this programme helps students prepare for that role. Thirdly, it encourages nationalism and patriotism,
which are crucial to have because only Filipinos are the ones who protect our nation during times of conflict. It is
crucial for students to go through this training because everyone will gain from it in the end.
The ROTC programme will be strengthened by making it mandatory for all college students, regardless of gender,
according to remarks made by Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte on July 25, 2016. He claimed that
strengthening the aforementioned programme would promote patriotism and responsible citizenship. Tan and
Bacungan, undated. The organisations who promote ROTC claim that the programme not only tries to instill
patriotism but also develops personality and leadership abilities that may allow the cadets to achieve successful
civilian careers in the same manner as what our President promised imminent future.
Personally, I firmly believe that the idea of making ROTC again necessary should not be carried out or given any
thought. I think that the programme does not cause distress not just the parents, but also the pupils. Additionally, it
did not advance nationalism or aid in self-improvement; rather, it ingrained hatred, violence, and terror in the
brains of young people. For me, ROTC—regardless of its purpose—would never increase one's love of nation and
will instead serve to better prepare us for conflict. I think more time should be spent accurately teaching our history
to the children if the government is sincere about instilling patriotism in them.

For students in the university level, the ROTC programme would be preferable as a voluntary option. Everyone can
contribute to the defence and preservation of our country in little and basic ways, but not to the point of dying. This
should be remembered at all times.
