ARMEN CARAPETYAN
The Faenza codex is of singular interest primarily for its great repertory
of keyboard music written about 1420. Considering that these pieces are
instrumental elaborations of French and Italian songs of the 14th century,
the collection becomes of great interest indeed, and, as a source, very im
portant.
The codex has also later 15th-century compositions added by Johannes
Bonadies. The 43 pages on which these compositions are written down ?
incidentally, in contrasting white notation ? form a part of the codex that
is certainly of secondary, perhaps even less than secondary, importance.
The codex contains, moreover, copies of some treatises. Here we are only
concerned with the section containing keyboard music.
The manuscript has been known after the name of Bonadies. For many
years it was believed to be lost. G. Roncaglia drew attention to it by his
article, "Intorno ad un c?dice di Johannes Bonadies" in Atti e memorie
della R. Accademia di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti di Modena, Serie V, t. IV
(1939), 31. A few years ago Dragan Plamenac rediscovered it for musi
cologists. He fully described the codex in his article, "Keyboard Music of
the 14th Century in Codex Faenza 117" in Journal of the American Musi
cologica! Society, IV ( 1951 ), and discussed further discoveries in his "New
Light on Codex Faenza 117" at Utrecht (Congresbericht Utrecht 1952
(1953)). Plamenac wrote also the article "Faenza", Codex 117" in Die
Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart.
There are no less than 104 pages of these keyboard compositions,
written in black notation and in score on a system of two six-line red staves.
This part of the codex will be reproduced in M?sica Disciplina in three or
four parts. We thank the Mayor of Faenza for kind permission to repro
duce the main part of the codex, and Prof. G. Vecchi of Bologna for good
offices in the matter, as also for obtaining fresh photographs and being
kind and helpful in various details.
It is hoped that this new feature in M?sica Disciplina ? the publica
tion of authoratative sources in facsimile ? will prove of good service to
scholars and will further enhance what is a primary aim in M?sica Disci
plina: usefulness as aid and as a tool and stimulus towards further research.
