SITUATION ANALYSIS
In 1975, The Gay Educational and Awareness Foundation (GEAR) was
established to increase research efforts on human sexuality, to educate
the public on LGBT+ related issues, and to provide mental and physical
health resources for the LGBT+ community. After signing its lease in 1977,
GEAR unfortunately lost its first facilities due to a devastating fire. After the
loss, GEAR began to expand as an organization after moving to a location
in downtown Cleveland. In 1988, GEAR changed its name to become the
Lesbian/Gay Community Center of Greater Cleveland. During the 80s and
90s, the organization provided many resources to those affected by the
ongoing AIDS crisis. The organization also began to plan various events for
LGBT+ community members. Cleveland saw its first full-scale pride march in
1989, fully organized by the community center. This served as a historic
moment for both the organization and many other Cleveland citizens in the
LGBT+ community. Since the 1990s, this has been a consistent event put on
by the community center.
Entering the 2000s, the community center moved to its current facilities
and changed its name to the LGBT+ Community Center of Greater
Cleveland in 2005. Fundraising efforts greatly increased for the
organization in the past two decades. In 2015, the center received the
largest donation in LGBT+ Cleveland history: a donation of $1.8 million. This
donor chooses to remain anonymous, but has given a total of $4.9 million
since the initial "Anonymous Angel" donation.
In 2016, Cleveland Pride canceled their annual pride march due to "a
changing social climate." Deeply upset by the news, the center took
matters into its own hands and planned "Pride in the CLE" with the help of
elected officials, volunteers, and other community members. Although
SITUATION ANALYSIS
previously planned by the center in the 90s, Cleveland Pride and "Pride in the
CLE" partnered together in 2018 to create a conjoined annual event managed
by the center. In the 2021 Annual Report, the center revealed over $135,000
was raised during Cleveland Pride the past year. Over 800 individuals
participated in the pride events, and over 40,000 individuals viewed the
WKYC program that was aired. To help with fundraising efforts, the center
also has many partnerships with over 47 nationally and locally owned
businesses, along with several other charities.
Beyond pride events, the center holds many other community events
for Cleveland citizens to participate in. In the summer, the center holds a
summer concert series on the terrace in the center's building. The center also
offers group counseling sessions for struggling LGBT+ community members.
The center also holds several workshop events for various LGBT+ issues. The
center serves as a primary resource for many individuals in the LGBT+
community in the greater Cleveland area.
Today, the center has a decent social media presence with over 6,000
followers on Instagram and almost 3,000 followers on Twitter. Another
primary method of communication the center uses is its email newsletter.
Along with these platforms, the center also has an extremely user-friendly
website that highlights all of the key details about the organization. Although
the LGBT+ Center of Greater Cleveland is a well known, relatively large
organization, extending its outreach is essential to its growth.

THE PROBLEM
Money is need during/after Pride, as it can get
expensive. There is a slight lack in Pride events
towards the end of June.
THE SOLUTION
The LGBT+ Center of Greater Cleveland will
host a market-style event that will contain
local businesses/artists, live music, and
