SITUATION ANALYSIS
In 1975, The Gay Educational and Awareness Foundation (GEAR) was
established to increase research efforts on human sexuality, to educate
the public on LGBT+ related issues, and to provide mental and physical
health resources for the LGBT+ community. After signing its lease in 1977,
GEAR unfortunately lost its first facilities due to a devastating fire. After the
loss, GEAR began to expand as an organization after moving to a location
in downtown Cleveland. In 1988, GEAR changed its name to become the
Lesbian/Gay Community Center of Greater Cleveland. During the 80s and
90s, the organization provided many resources to those affected by the
ongoing AIDS crisis. The organization also began to plan various events for
LGBT+ community members. Cleveland saw its first full-scale pride march in
1989, fully organized by the community center. This served as a historic
moment for both the organization and many other Cleveland citizens in the
LGBT+ community. Since the 1990s, this has been a consistent event put on
by the community center.
Entering the 2000s, the community center moved to its current facilities
and changed its name to the LGBT+ Community Center of Greater
Cleveland in 2005. Fundraising efforts greatly increased for the
organization in the past two decades. In 2015, the center received the
largest donation in LGBT+ Cleveland history: a donation of $1.8 million. This
donor chooses to remain anonymous, but has given a total of $4.9 million
since the initial "Anonymous Angel" donation.
In 2016, Cleveland Pride canceled their annual pride march due to "a
changing social climate." Deeply upset by the news, the center took
matters into its own hands and planned "Pride in the CLE" with the help of
elected officials, volunteers, and other community members. Although
SITUATION ANALYSIS
previously planned by the center in the 90s, Cleveland Pride and "Pride in the
CLE" partnered together in 2018 to create a conjoined annual event managed
by the center. In the 2021 Annual Report, the center revealed over $135,000
was raised during Cleveland Pride the past year. Over 800 individuals
participated in the pride events, and over 40,000 individuals viewed the
WKYC program that was aired. To help with fundraising efforts, the center
also has many partnerships with over 47 nationally and locally owned
businesses, along with several other charities.
Beyond pride events, the center holds many other community events
for Cleveland citizens to participate in. In the summer, the center holds a
summer concert series on the terrace in the center's building. The center also
offers group counseling sessions for struggling LGBT+ community members.
The center also holds several workshop events for various LGBT+ issues. The
center serves as a primary resource for many individuals in the LGBT+
community in the greater Cleveland area.
Today, the center has a decent social media presence with over 6,000
followers on Instagram and almost 3,000 followers on Twitter. Another
primary method of communication the center uses is its email newsletter.
Along with these platforms, the center also has an extremely user-friendly
website that highlights all of the key details about the organization. Although
the LGBT+ Center of Greater Cleveland is a well known, relatively large
organization, extending its outreach is essential to its growth.

EVENT OVERVIEW
TIME & LOCATION
The Summer Pride Market will be held in the LGBT+ Community Center
building (6705 Detroit Ave, Cleveland, OH) on Saturday, June 24th, 2023
from 2-7PM. The two story building has an open concept layout,
perfect for setting up booths and vendors throughout. The terrace on
the second floor is extremely spacious and equipped for live music.
Tables and chairs are provided by the venue and the venue is free of
cost. The LGBT+ Community Center building's capacity is 250-350.

VENDORS & PARTICIPANTS

Each business/artist will set up a few hours prior to the start time or the
night before the event. Each participant's vendor permit will be
included in the budget. In total, there will be 20-30 local LGBT+
owned/ally businesses/artists participating in the market. To recruit
these individuals we will both reach out to specific businesses and
host a social media call for participants to submit an application.
Some potential businesses include Urban Orchid, Soothing Sloth Soap
Company, Chill Pop. Pet-Tique, and Coven. LGBT+ Cleveland's
credibility as an organization and its promise to donate to a valuable
cause will entice local businesses/artists to participate. To fundraise,
LGBT+ Cleveland will receive 40% of profit. Similarly, there will also be a
social media call for local musicians to volunteer and perform on the
terrace. A dress rehearsal will be held the day before to make the
musicians to feel comfortable with the venue. In total, there will be
about 5-10 musicians participating with a variety of genres.
EVENT OVERVIEW
DONATIONS & VOLUNTEERS
As previously mentioned, a portion of the profit will go towards LGBT+
Cleveland; however, there will also be a booth at the market
dedicated to donations and volunteer sign ups. At this booth,
individuals can select a specific amount to directly go towards the
Community Center. Various resources and statistics will be shared
and distributed to individuals via flyers and stickers. Volunteers
working the booth will also be handing out volunteer applications for
those interested in volunteering for LGBT+ Cleveland in the future. For
working the market, 10-20 volunteers will be selected prior to the event
to operate booths and provide any addition assistance. At the
donation booth, the social media raffle will also be mentioned.

SOCIAL MEDIA RAFFLE

Throughout the event, several announcements will be made
pertaining to the social media raffle. The raffle urges participants to
post a fact they learned or something they purchased from the
market to their Instagram story with the hashtag #CLEPrideMarket.
Participants also must repost the infographic that will be posted on
LGBT+ Cleveland's Instagram, along with following @lgbtcleveland.
Three winners will be direct-messaged on Sunday morning and will
each win a $100 Amazon gift-card.
